Does Ramage deserve a prison sentence?
Thu, January 17, 2008

Former NHL player Rob Ramage was called an "exemplary citizen" Thursday, but an Ontario judge said he had to send a message of deterrence against drunk driving as he sent him to prison for four years for a crash that killed his friend, a former Chicago Blackhawks player.

Do you think Ramage got what he deserved? Have your say in our forum.

Ramage sentenced to four years

Yes Ramage has showed that he is truly remorseful of his actions by denying he did anything wrong.

Ramage made a concious decision to DRINK and DRIVE, him being friends with Magnussen is totally irellevant , by the way some friend!! Do you MURDER your friends. He should be locked away for his natural life.

We should be light on all criminals. Don't they suffer enough with the thought of their actions?

I think what the family says should be considered in the equation.

Heatley was lucky to get off lightly as that incident happened in the US. While Heatley wasn't DUI, his carelessnes in not being able to handle the vehicle caused his frind'd death. In Canada, you rarely get any jail time for careless driving causing death.

In Canada, impaired driving that murdered people (I call it murder because the person driving drunk made the choice to do so) until 2007 never resulted in jail sentences greater than 7 years. In fact in London, ON, a woman who killed a passenger in her car and crippled another passenger was given house arrest because the judge stated that long jail terms haven't been proved as a deterent to impaired driving. In Detroit a few years ago, a young man who was drunk crashed into a car from Chatham Ontario and killed all 4 members of that family. He was sentenced to 20 years to life. In Canada he might have gotten 3 or 4 years and with time off for good behaviour, about 10 months in jail. Big difference. In the US victims are considered, in Canada only the accussed gets consideration from the courts.

Ramage should get jail time and probably will, but his sentence will be so short it won't really matter. Atheletes, movie stars and other self considered VIPs never seem to get the same treatment as any ordinary citizen.

Maybe some day we will live to see everyone treated equally, just don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.

How can anyone who reads this sad ending to this sad story not feel sad for everyone involved?

Rob Ramage and Keith Magnussen were the best of buddies to the end. Keith Magnussen's family wants the court to be lenient with Rob Ramage. Rob Ramage has the weight that his actions resulted in a friend's death, on his shoulders for the remainder of his life.

We should all be praying for Rob Ramage, his family and the Magnussen family, and all those affected by this tragedy.

We would not expect less for ourselves

Michael

You are probably right. Ramage will end up with a slap on the wrist even though he was hammered.

Heatley wasnt drunk and Dan Synders parents asked that he not be given any jail time because they had already forgiven him.

Ramage will most likely get something along the lines of what Danny Heatley received. That'swhy people continue to drink and drive and get cited for DUI's & DWI's over and over again. The punishment is not harsh enough and no amount of Public Service messages is going to have an impact on this problem in Society until the punishment gets tougher!

Tell me, why and how, did we ever think a bunch of beer drinking buddies should ever go to jail ? After all, famous or not , it's always hold my beer, watch this, versus oh crap

before an accendent.
