Should Sundin seek a trade?
Sun, December 2, 2007

While he's been the face of the Maple Leafs for 13 seasons, Mats Sundin is running out of time to win a Stanley Cup.

Sundin may be a good guy but he is not a real hockey player. He has the body and all the physical skills but most nights he is pretty much invisible. He may have big stats but that does not make him a champion. What has he and his team ever won? The Leafs re-building process starts the day Sundin is gone. They should use his salary to pay some real hockey players. If the Leafs can get someone to take him in exchange for a real player, they should make the deal now.

Sundin should be traded right now since he is playing well. He wont keep it up all year so strike while the iron is hot. We all saw what he did down the stretch last year which was nothing when his team really needed his offence.

Get draft picks for him and a good young player. Dump his $ 5.5 mill contract and use his salary for free agents in the summer.

Robert: And how do you spell "delusional"? They have won two in a row and now you have the Leafs steam-rolling along into the 2nd round of the playoffs. Ahhh Leaf Nation, love is blind......and dumb as a stump.

Mats Sundin MUST remain a Leaf if Toronto ever wants to win a Cup again. I watched the last Cup Win by the Leafs and I can tell you this; Sundin is the only person in the current lineup who has the skill, abilities and heart of the players on the 67 team. Don't forget they weren't supposed to win the Cup that year either.

When the Leafs get to the second round this year. You will all be thanking all the hockey gods for Mats Sundin.

Funny how Leaf fans try to divert a legitimate question into a chance to slog the Sens. Sure the Leafs have had some success against the Sens in the playoffs but they won exactly nothing in doing so. There's no bragging rights that come with beating one team. Face it, the Sens beat the Sens under Martin, the Leafs had little to do with it. Now that Martin's gone...

And sure Hammer, go and ridicule Alfredsson, all he did was lead the playoffs in scoring last year, producing when it counted. Go ahead and single out a guy who right now is better than any player in the Toronto organization.

The Toronto fans are deluded because if you talk to them for the past almost twenty years they've almost been good enough to win. But if you look at the stats, not only has the team not come close but in the past 40 years, no Toronto player has ever won any major trophy in the NHL. No Art Rosses, no Calders, no Vezinas, etc. The best they got was one Lady Byng by Mogilny, a trophy and a player normally ridiculed by Toronto fans anyway.

Bottom line is that the Leafs organization is a sick one and the fans are the symptom or the cause, not sure which. For it to get better they've got to curry real hockey fans who can admire a worthy adversary like Alfie and appreciate how the Sens built a better team, instead of railing every time their team loses.

Anyhow, Sundin is a good player and yes the Leafs should trade him for youth

Stay in Toronto or win a cup?? You should be playing to win the cup and he knows that can't be done with the Leafs.

With a few of these posts being so much on the "defensive", maybe some of you guys should be on the leaf's blue line.

Sundin will never leave Toronto on his free will. The man's too smart for that. He knows that being the best of the mediocre in hogtown, is a lot better then being in the middle of the pack anywhere else. PLUS.. he enjoys "total immunity" from the media zoo of Toronto. Scoring one goal in a span of 21 games, while his beloved leafs were fighting, yet another year, to get in the playoffs, was hardly noticed. (i wasn't even gonna bring this up but, since some of you guys seem to INSIST on bringing up the past, why not?) Cripes! If Sundin stays where he is, even in his second year of collecting old age security, he knows he'd still be in the middle of the pack.

He may be a good player where he is but, since none of the other 29 GMs are named JFJ, don't count on getting too much for a player that has only a few years left in him, UNLESS he stays in Toronto.

Always a pleasure..

hi gustav,

Yeah that is what I thought about Cujo and let's see he last 4 games longer in detroit that year. Hopefully Leafs can scrape in and play ottawa and send them to the scrap heap again. Sundin is great but look how the leafs(Ballard) treated Sittler at the end, very disgusting. Oh well hope we can beat nashville on tuesday and go from there, remember lots of games left and we are only 8 pts behind the sens for first place (ha ha)!

GO LEAFS GO!

Honorable... loyalty... blah. IF Sundin really cares about the Leafs as much as he claims, what he would do is accept a trade to another organization so that the Leafs can get some high draft picks and a couple of good players. AND THEN... if he really loves Toronto as much as he says, he could sign here again in the summer when he becomes a free agent and take a run at the cup next year -- 'cuz it ain't happening this year! (Kinda like what Glen Wesley did when he got traded here and now back in Carolina)... Do something smart for once TML... get rid of him and give him his "shot" at the cup... even if he doesn't want it!
bruno b, 2007-12-03 16:30:28

first of all its not his choice and it is a business..they should trade him while his market value is good..you would get good value for him now..why wait and let him retire a leaf and what do you get then for him zippo notta nothing...all you get whoopdeedoo mats retired a leaf...
