Would Avery be a good fit for the Rangers?
Sat, February 7, 2009

BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA

Sean Avery's road back to the NHL has officially started.

The suspended Dallas Stars winger was placed on waivers today, which means he's ready to play after undergoing counselling, following comments he made earlier this season in Calgary.

If nobody claims him he will clear Monday at noon. The belief is the New York Rangers have discussed the possiblity of bringing in Avery at half-price. He still has three-years, $12 million remaining on his contract.

Would Avery be a good fit with the Rangers? Have your say in our forum.

Only in Toronto will there be this much publicity over nothing. Avery is not the first pest nor will he be the last in NHL history. But right now he is the best at what he does plus has the talent to make some plays. He easily got under the Toronto players skin taking them out of their game. I am assuming they actually had a Game Plan. Belak should concentrate on using his stick for constructive purposes and just maybe he would play more. Comments incendiary in nature by Belak should be sanctioned by the league

As a Rangers fan, I actually do feel he crosses the line. However, Leaf fans can't say too much - Tucker was the same way and still is, but to a lesser extent today. Avery is just younger and more feisty. Do I think it is right? Absolutely not, but until the league deals with EVERYONE like this, it is almost a necessity to have a person like this on each team - Also, look at the Rangers record without him. He's a good player as well as an agitator.

I cannot WAIT until somebody Tie Domi's him right in the mouth like Tie did to Ulf Samuellson. I don't care who says these things don't belong in hockey. You shouldn't write cheques your ass can't cash. Ulfie wrote one of those, and it bounced. Big time. I can't wait until Avery lies on the ice with a broken nose. Among the cheering throughout the league, and likely by his own family, you will be able to hear the clear sound of my laughter.

Does Avery cross the line?

Does Darcy Tucker, Did Ken Linseman, Did Bobby Clarke?

All these guys crosed the line many times. This is a part of their make-up. It can work to their team's benefit one game and then bring their team down the next. There will always be players such as this in the league because they make their opponents crazy.

Ask any player, It's great when they are on your side.

Yes, Avery does cross the line. He's far from the only one (see Tucker & Co), of course. Unfortunately, the game has a long history of these types of players being considered "necessary". I've heard all the rhetoric about the need for an agitator or pest, yes, and it's for hockey people to decide if any of that is true. All I will say is that players like Avery (or Tucker, or Linesman, or Claude the Fraud...) detract from the sporting appeal of the game. There used to be a certain nobility to sporting competitions (even when the game becomes a business, and the players are depending on the incomes from the business). We used to be able to look up to players not just for their success but for the way in which they competed - names like Jean Beliveau, Bobby Charlton and Russ Jackson immediately spring to mind. No one aspires to be an Avery or Tucker. Absolutely no-one.
