Would Avery be a good fit for the Rangers?
Sat, February 7, 2009

BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA

Sean Avery's road back to the NHL has officially started.

The suspended Dallas Stars winger was placed on waivers today, which means he's ready to play after undergoing counselling, following comments he made earlier this season in Calgary.

If nobody claims him he will clear Monday at noon. The belief is the New York Rangers have discussed the possiblity of bringing in Avery at half-price. He still has three-years, $12 million remaining on his contract.

Would Avery be a good fit with the Rangers? Have your say in our forum.

Avery definitely crossed the line. The Dallas Stars also crossed the line. They overreacted to the situation. The player was duly suspended by the NHL. It should have ended there. The Dallas Stars are trying to appear sanctimonious. This time the Stars pulled off a "SLOPPY SECOND MOVE"

RM, you need a dictionary. As stupid as Avery is he did not give "A false statement that injures another’s reputation in the community". He unwisely mentioned that NHL players have taken a liking to his discards. It appears you're guilty of defamation. An apology to Angelo should is due - perhaps a 6 day suspension from posting here too.

ANGELO.... you for real. Defamation does not fit into free speech... maybe you should think before you "free speech"...you might sound wiser!

Yes, it is time for professional sport to deal severely with un-professional actions like Averys.

I am not sure what the appropriate penalty is, but maybe a year off to get his act together, but give him one more chance at the N.H.L. but keep him on a short lease , then if he steps out of line again , send him to Afganistan to see what real men do.

Thanks .

I don't like Bettman also , but that's on account of his "coccky attitude"; however in this matter I agree 100%. Avery crossed every line and even the gray"est" of lines... Dallas did the right thing for their club and the league as well....

Publicity is good for sports of course. cause news makes people want to go see and well that's what advertising is all about... but this type of offensive and stupid comments is not considered advertising, it's called Trash... remember the word all of us don't want our kids to see or hear. Avery is equal to trash, and he has all but himself to thank...

So what, the man is ignorant, the world won't end,nor should his career.A suspension yes but if all this wasn't played up so much on the media this too would pass.Sorry but we have worse people running our countries on both sides of the border and we put up with it with no fuss, relax hockey will not die because of 1 stupid comment

Still waiting for Bettman to get something right. This suspension is silly, compare this to players who stomp on other players legs with their skates, high sticks to the face, Bertuzzi incident? Yep, Avery is a goof, but what he said is in bad taste, it's not endangering anyones life. When will Bettman go away for good?
Shawn, 2008-12-17 13:23:17

It almost looks like Bettman is taking all the credit for Avery being put completely out of the NHL. The NHL gave him a mere 6 game suspension; Dallas gave him the heave ho. Talk about taking advantage of a situation WOW!!!
