Can the Oilers make the post-season?
Mon, March 31, 2008

Can exuberance make up for inexperience? Can momentum make it possible to scoff at long odds?

The Edmonton Oilers insist the answer is yes. And now that they've climbed to within three points of a Western Conference playoff berth with 12 wins in their last 15 games, who's to say they're wrong?

Can the Oilers make the post-season? Have your say in our forum.

I laugh when you mention that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. You have been saying that since messier left. And sure the current coaching staff fluked their way into the cup final but then failed to take them to the playoffs the very next year. "INCONSISTENCE". Now quit your pathetic excuses and go cheer for your backup team "Calgary"(the real team of Alberta).LOL!!!

Once Penner is back with Horcoff next season most doubts will be put to rest.

Good run boys, you made Oil Country proud and we're all eagerly awaiting next season.Too bad though, given even another week I'm quite sure they would have done it.(Not mention the Canucks 10 OTL points and Nashville's pathetic Central schedule.) Oh well, c'est la vie...

GO OILERS GO!!!

Everyone is still beating up Lowe about the Penner deal, myself included. The jury is still out on that one. At least the draft pick going to that ahole in Anaheim got a lot higher in the end. Think on the bright side it could have been much worse had they signed Vanek, 33goals, 28 assists for four first round draft picks compared to Penner with 23 goals and 23 assists for one first rounder. Luck was on Lowe's side this time, Oiler faithful are watching though.

Nighttrain, I have to disagree about McTavish. Given that no one gave this team a chance of making the playoffs the start of the season, the Oilers did quite well with what they have. If you guys let McT go, I guarantee you he'll have about five or six teams lined up to take him

You got the nail right on the head there. How can a team make it to game seven of the stanley cup finals and need to have the coach and gm fired. Doesn't make sence to me. Last season was crazy with guys wanting to leave and guys trying to weasle more money out of them. Lowe managed to recover relativly well. Nighttrain you will see next year. As far as Mac T he could only do so much with what he had. Most of the lines where new to playing with each other. It takes time till they can anticipate what a team mate is going to do and where they will be. The end of the season proves that Mac T was teaching them something.

well, they didn't. and they lost against their biggest rivals. i guess that's make it even more stinging. but it was a good run and if this is the future of the oilers, then they should be very happy about it!

Nighttrain you clearly aren't familiar with Edmonton, it's fans and the local media. MacT and Lowe have come under TONS of criticism but still they persevere. Why? because unlike other organizations they realize that the "consistency" you speak of starts from the top down. Let's look at their record shall we?

Before the lockout they simply didn't have the money to compete at the highest level, and still made the playoffs in several years regardless, including series wins over Dallas and Colorado; both teams that had piles more cash and star players than Edmonton. Post-lockout you say? Ok, let's address all the various complaints towards them. 1)The Pronger trade. Pronger demanded the trade, straight up. Rather than let it drag on all summer, Lowe chose to end it quickly and move on. Yes, Lupul didn't pan out, but Smid has been a very good young d-man. 2)The Ryan Smyth deal. Smitty was basically playing chicken with Lowe and got his bluff called. Lowe acted and got Nilsson as well as the Isles 1st round pick. That pick will be higher than the one he gave up to the Ducks. A good deal considering Smitty would have been UFA in July anyways. 3)Marc-Andre Bergeron for Grebeshkov. Nuff said. 4)Dustin Penner. One of their best players for a middle of the pack or possibly lower draft pick. Again, nuff said. 5)Signing Mathieu Garon. Yes, he's hurt but became their starter, a much younger starter. The only deal I will rag on Lowe about is giving then 37 year old Roloson 3 mil a year but hey, after the playoffs Roli had, who could blame him?

As for the goals they let in, well, their starting goaltender is hurt and their defence is young to say the least. With guys Gilbert, Grebeshkov, Pitkanen etc. back there, their back end like their forwards looks bright for the future.

They might squeak in but they wont get past the first round. This team has got the players but their problem as with almost every year is "consistance". The only consistance Ive seen with this team is giving up 2/3 goal leads in the third. And another thing, why dont they start making an effort before mid february? If I were a fan of the Oil (which i am not) I would be somewhat peeved at paying to sit in rexall all season with the biggest thrill coming from the 50/50 draw. Like I said I believe they have the talent on this team and the only aspect of this team that hasnt been attacked is the coaching. They should skid McT and Lowe. They might have been good players in their day but like Gretz they are no coaches.
Nighttrain, 2008-04-01 18:59:31

its 2 hours from game time, the oilers have gained 5 years experience in one month, the coaching staff the players and whole organization has come together tremendously, the kids that they have in the lineup have matured and are a class act, hopefully they make it but the organization the mgmt and the players can hold there head high!!!! I think there will be a place for Lord Stanley's cup here within the next 3 years

.."dooon't stop...belieeeeving"...

and I still haven't.

GO OILERS GO!!!
