Can exuberance make up for inexperience? Can momentum make it possible to scoff at long odds?
The Edmonton Oilers insist the answer is yes. And now that they've climbed to within three points of a Western Conference playoff berth with 12 wins in their last 15 games, who's to say they're wrong?
Can the Oilers make the post-season? Have your say in our forum.
Oilers trying to sneak into playoffs
Good run boys, you made Oil Country proud and we're all eagerly awaiting next season.Too bad though, given even another week I'm quite sure they would have done it.(Not mention the Canucks 10 OTL points and Nashville's pathetic Central schedule.) Oh well, c'est la vie...
GO OILERS GO!!!

You got the nail right on the head there. How can a team make it to game seven of the stanley cup finals and need to have the coach and gm fired. Doesn't make sence to me. Last season was crazy with guys wanting to leave and guys trying to weasle more money out of them. Lowe managed to recover relativly well. Nighttrain you will see next year. As far as Mac T he could only do so much with what he had. Most of the lines where new to playing with each other. It takes time till they can anticipate what a team mate is going to do and where they will be. The end of the season proves that Mac T was teaching them something.

Before the lockout they simply didn't have the money to compete at the highest level, and still made the playoffs in several years regardless, including series wins over Dallas and Colorado; both teams that had piles more cash and star players than Edmonton. Post-lockout you say? Ok, let's address all the various complaints towards them. 1)The Pronger trade. Pronger demanded the trade, straight up. Rather than let it drag on all summer, Lowe chose to end it quickly and move on. Yes, Lupul didn't pan out, but Smid has been a very good young d-man. 2)The Ryan Smyth deal. Smitty was basically playing chicken with Lowe and got his bluff called. Lowe acted and got Nilsson as well as the Isles 1st round pick. That pick will be higher than the one he gave up to the Ducks. A good deal considering Smitty would have been UFA in July anyways. 3)Marc-Andre Bergeron for Grebeshkov. Nuff said. 4)Dustin Penner. One of their best players for a middle of the pack or possibly lower draft pick. Again, nuff said. 5)Signing Mathieu Garon. Yes, he's hurt but became their starter, a much younger starter. The only deal I will rag on Lowe about is giving then 37 year old Roloson 3 mil a year but hey, after the playoffs Roli had, who could blame him?
As for the goals they let in, well, their starting goaltender is hurt and their defence is young to say the least. With guys Gilbert, Grebeshkov, Pitkanen etc. back there, their back end like their forwards looks bright for the future.
