Should the Sens target Peter Forsberg?
Tue, October 23, 2007

The Ottawa Senators are at the top of Peter Forsberg's wish list.

Two NHL sources told the Sun yesterday the Colorado Avalanche and Senators are among the unrestricted free agent centre's top choices as a final destination.

While the Avs are considered the top contender because of Forsberg's history with the franchise -- he played with the Quebec Nordiques/Avalanche for 10 seasons early in his career -- the sources said Ottawa is held in high regard by the Swedish star, who has been skating with MoDo of the Swedish Elite League as he prepares for a return to the NHL.

What's your take on the Senators chances of landing Forsberg? Should the Sens go after the top free agent to bolster their club for another Stanley Cup run? Have your say in our forum.

The Sens don't need a player like Forsberg, who is fading and a second line centre at best. A team that really needs him is Edmonton, whose young forwards could benefit from his presence (but that team does not seem to be the shortlist).

I think we are desperate for a player like Forsberg. After all, what is the Sens' record? 9-1? Yeah, we need him real bad!

Sign Spezza. Keep Gerber. Keep Emery.Don't lose Vermette, or Kelly.

We'll be just fine this year.

Forget it! Peter Forsberg hasn't been fully healthy for the past 5 years. He is only interested in extending his injury plagued career. The gamble for Ottawa is not worth it, and there is a great chance at ruining the chemistry on the Senators team. Players like Forsberg are more of a good fit in Toronto where they are known to take any one who is over the hill, or near the end of his career. The Leafs, and Leaf fans love to associate with players whose future is behind them.

I think he'll end up back in Philly. He liked playing there with Gagne, but everything went wrong last year for the Flyers, so they traded him. I think he would relish the chance to play with the core of players they have there now.

Are you all nuts, he is exactly the type of player that could put Ottawa over the top. Him and a starting Goalie and the cup is almost a given. Sign him if available. Look at what teams paid for other free agents this past fall, Forsberg is a bargain at 5 mil.

The only way to sign Forsberg is with a 2 million base salary then put in bonuses for games played, points etc. so he can get to the 5 million if he earns it by playing 70 - 75 games a year.

The Sens already have enough offensive firepower up front, they don't need to spend 5 mil a season for more of the same. If Alfie, Heatley or Spezza were to suffer a long-term injury by mid-November when Forsberg will make up his mind, then it might make some sense to take a chance on him, but again not for 5 mil.

Detroit has more cap room to play with and has a greater need for a player like Forsberg than Ottawa does, and so do the Canucks. I don't think Ottawa will be able to pay him what he wants, and given his history with the Avalanche, I really believe Colorado will wind up with him.

If Forsberg decides to come back to the NHL,it'll more then likely be with the Avs.That is where he started (nordiques back then),and i think that is where he'd like to finish his career at.Mind you!A healthy Forsberg would be a great addition to an already powerfull Ottawa offense.I strongly believe that he'll get his 5 millions,but...not with the Sens.

Keep money for Spezza.
Lawrence, 2007-10-23 17:06:11

I think he would be a good addition to the team. However being that he apparently wants to goto the sens, they should get him at a deal. The person that wants something always has to take the lesser. Just like with Smitty when he left Edmonton said he wanted to stay and even cried at the airport but rejected the offer.
