What effect will the NFL have in Toronto?
Tue, April 15, 2008

The Buffalo Bills are coming to Toronto.

The NFL has reached an agreement with the Bills that will allow them to play eight games -- five regular-season contests and three exhibitions -- in Toronto over the next five years.

Will games north of the border have any effect on the CFL? Would you go to an NFL game in Canada? Have your say in our forum.

A foothold in Toronto

Yes, the NFL could survive. Unfortunately the Buffalo Bills could not. Toronto doesn't want the Buffalo Bills. They may draw a crowd to the Rogers Centre but its to watch the other team.

Vince

The Bills if playing in Toronto would have a 2 million + fan base and also the golden horseshoe.

Its not about the fans, its about corporation support which isnt much in Buffalo.

Let's see this from Ralph Wilson's perspective. Many fans that attend the Bills' games (approximately 20%-25%) are from the Golden Horseshoe area. That leaves 75% of those attending are from the Buffalo or northern New York area. Why would an owner who has a 75% fan base take the team to where he has only a 25% fan base? It's economic suicide unless, he is stringing everyone along into luring more of the suckers into buying more Bills’ tickets under the pretense that he is considering on moving the team to Toronto.

Ralph Wilson has never said that he wants to move the team anywhere outside of Buffalo. Why are people jumping ahead of themselves assuming that he will?

He is only playing the suckers! He is only trying to drive the market up for the bidders.

The anti-T.O-NFL crowd is in love with an inferior game played with inferior players. If the CFL was so successful they wouldn't be drawing NFL wanna-be's & rejects, secure the best talent north, consistently be packing stadiums (they don't have)with 70,000+ screaming fans, & wanting to expand their product to USA markets. Not the other way around.

Mathematics would mean that Russian hockey would beat Canadian hockey every single time we play them. Politics means if you spend a gazilllion dollars for a big name American from some big US college, he is going to play whether he is better than some Canadian player or not. It happens all the time in the NFL now with American players that don't make a huge splash in their senior year or happen to play for a crappy team that's how we get players the caliber of Kenton Keith or Charles Roberts etc. That's the politics of the NFL and that's how the Cincinati Bengals missed a huge opportunity to win the Superbowl a couple of years ago.

It's not hard to judge. It is simple mathematics. The U.S. has a lot more people playing football than Canada,so it stands to reason that they would produce more players. They also have a lot more support at the high school and College levels.I'm not knocking Canada Gareau,i'm just a realist. As for politics preventing Canadians from playing in the NFL,I think if their was a great football from Canada that could help a team win,George Bush would look the other way.

Chuck

Playing a regular season game in Toronto is the first step in showing the league Toronto will support an NFL team.

Toronto will be in the NFL in a few years. It is going to happen.

NBA and MLB came here so why wouldnt the NFL ?

Go Toronto NFL Go
Jimmy, 2007-10-25 09:33:07

Hey O'Neill, I'm not going to tell you that the best American players play in the CFL. They don't, they play in the NFL but the Canadian players that play in the CFL are really good and most would not get a fair shot at playing in the NFL(too political. On every CFL roster there are more Canadians than Americans so to say that the CFL is mostly Americans is misinformed. It should be mentioned that Team Canada has won the NFL global football championship which is the world junior football championship for the last 3 years in a row. So it's hard to judge just how good our Canadian players really are.

Jimmy,

Don't hold your breath! You'll turn two shades of blue. Hey, you'll look like an Argo fan! hehehe.

The NFL has been paying lip service to Toronto for years. They would rather put a 3rd team in New York or a 2nd team in Chicago or even go to Mexico City (the actual next biggest market)before putting a team in Toronto.

Chuck, 2007-10-24 15:22:37

Chuck

Relocation and expansion are 2 different things.

The league wants L.A. as an expansion team so they can soak them for as much as they can get. After L.A. Toronto is the biggest market available. The NFL will be in Toronto in the next few years.
