Should McCabe be traded?
Sun, February 3, 2008

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?

The Leafs highest paid defenceman has been a target of boo birds in Toronto for his play. Should the Leafs try and trade McCabe?

Have your say in our forum.

You know what? When McCabe was lighting it up after being traded from Chicago, I didn' hear anyone complaining about him being over-rated. The same band-wagon Leaf fans were demanding that good young players like him to be signed long term.

So now this guy has a bad start to the year and fans are razzing him? Typical of the miserable Leaf fans, most of whom know NOTHING about hockey or the NHL. I am saying this as a long term, die hard, TRUE Leafs fan who is sick of admitting that too many of the team's fans are morons. This is why the newspapers always slam the team --- they know it will boost readership.

True Leaf fans support their players until it becomes painfully evident (like over the course of an entire season, not seven games) that the player no longer belongs here. To all of those who say he is over rated, most of you contributed to that hype years ago.

I am a hard-assed Leaf fan in enemy territory. The players know what the Toronto fans are like prior to signing the big contract. McCabe has had it coming for two years now. Once he picks up the defensive end of his game (it was never there) the fans will lay off. Many former leafs have gone through it and are now adored long after their playing days are done.

Everyone is missing the point. When you pay $250 a seat to watch "professional" athletes you have a right to boo. No one complains when you cheer a good play so don't complain when you boo a high priced player who doesn't perform.

McCabe is paid to be one of the top 3 defensemen in the league, but his on ice performance indicates otherwise. I don't blame that on Bryan McCabe, but the horrible GM who offered the one dimensional player his contract. It is JOHN FERGUSION JUNIOR who should be booed and run out of town! JFJ is responsible for assembling this horrible defense core by giving them ridiculous contracts! Everyone knows your performance slowly degrades each year. Offering a big contract right off the bat based on past performances is downright stupid. The Leafs under JFJ's guidance went from a playoff contender to barely making the playoffs. Is it any surprise that the team went south after Pat Quinn's departure? And as for Bryan McCabe scoring into his own net, it could of been worse. Chris Phillips did the same thing last year that helped the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup! Think about that!

If the puck was in the other end of the rink ...Yeah ! However goals have been scored by many of great players...in their own net...right Dougy...

The way I see it, if you just watched the leafs play live at the ACC. It probably just cost you at least for two, for the night, 3-4 hundred bucks all said and done so if you are disapointed in the play of one or more of the team I say let them know it.The other night watching Tucker and others on the news defend their teamate "Give him a break" made me sick they sould be holding themselves accountable thats their problem as I see it ,after all this is their jobs. Give me a break if I don't do my job properly I'm the first one to here about it and I certainly don't have people paying hundreds to come watch me do it. Stop your whineing leafs and start your wining, forty plus years is plenty long enough to suffer as a fan and loosing patients is the reason for those boo's. You should be honored and proud to pull on that jersey and play in this market and its passionate fans.

There is an awful lot of other Leafs that need a boo more than Mcabe. Sad that the Leaf fans need to take the woes out on him.

I'd say I'm the biggest anti Leafs fan there is. I watch every game I can to see them fail...as I have watched them for years, they never dissappoint me. In fact, on many a night they cheer me up (being a miserable losing team and all). And the latest blunder by McCabe, well, I'm lovin' it. Looks good on him and Toronto.
Mike, 2007-10-18 07:51:11

Yes, the fans should lay off him. I personally don't like him as a player, because he is a one dimensional player..not good defensively, never has been...not good offensively..never has been, has a great shot..but everyone knows how to take his shot away now..So is it his fault the Leafs are dumb enough to give a million dollar player at best.. seven million, no...I am sure you wouldn't pass the opportunity to make 7 times what you are actually worth.

So again should the fans leave him alone...yes...they should focus there anger towards JFJ...he is the problem.
Paul, 2007-10-18 07:46:56

They should give him a break. The fact is he can't be traded at the moment, even if they'd tried they would get nothing in return. So the best option is to leave him alone and hope he gets his game back. hat's the best option for the Leafs.
