Should McCabe be traded?
Sun, February 3, 2008

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?

The Leafs highest paid defenceman has been a target of boo birds in Toronto for his play. Should the Leafs try and trade McCabe?

Have your say in our forum.

My read on the situation with McCabe is that the fans are not really upset with him. I believe they are actually upset with management for spending so much money on such an inept defense corps and for comitting to them for such a long period of time. How can you be optimistic when the future of the Leafs is tied to this group for such a long period of time? What were they thinking granting a no movement clause?

McCabe is merely the lighning rod as the highest paid player. Because fans don't often (read never)have the ear of management to tell them how frustrated they are, they instead boo the symbol of the management's ineptitude.

Talk to me when he actually scores a goal 5 on 5.

I have zero sympathy for this palooka. He is no good. They could not trade him if his salary was the minimum. When he is on the ice the Leafs are virtually shorthanded. Ditto for Tucker.

McCabe, Tucker & Ferguson should be shipped out...pronto. This poor franchise....is there no hope?

Even the net can get the puck off him or take him out of the play ( belongs in A.H.L. )

Bryan McCabe's time as an effective Maple Leaf defenseman and luck as an appreciated blueliner have run out.

With today's cap limits and his exhorbitant salary, he is expendable.

Dump him to the Islanders or any other suckers willing to give up decent draft choices avalable over the next two years.

At the time of his signing, his market value, age and ability seemed adequate.

He has now become an overpaid, underachieving and overrated defensive liability.

For what - a bucket of pucks and a roll of tape?

Enjoy your investment Leaf fans!!

Ben, I forgot to mention, another good example of Toronto fans and the media making a less than average player out to be the next coming of Gretzky (God). Carlo Colaiacovo, what a bum, a liability everytime he is no the ice. But if you here you (fans) and the TO media talk about him, oh wait till Carlo comes back from surgery, this is Carlo's coming out year etc.

Ben, where do I begin? No my opinion of McCabe has not changed because of last night. Even a blind squirel finds a nut now and then. To be clear, I for one never stated Sheldon Souray, Kimmo Timmonen and Ed Jovanaski are not over paid. Arguably they are. However, it is my opinion all three are better than McCabe. McCabe is no different from any other has been, redundant player that Toronto aquires in an attempt to resurrect a career. take Darcy Tucker, an agitator, an average player who bullies younger, smaller players. He has a good season and Leaf fans are trying to tell anyone who will listen that he deserves a Jagr or Ingila type salary. Toronto pays average players way too much money and then bills them as stars. Stop grasping at straws and get some decent players in Toronto. Perhaps then the media and fans will leave them alone because they may have something better to write about, namely a winning team. The fact you asked me that question, "has my opinion changed after last night", just goes to show that you are a true maple laff fan. Hey I'm surprised you aren't talking Stanely Cup. Why not they won a game. Big deal.

No...don't trade McCabe...ever. He fits in perfectly with a loser team like the Leafs. I like watching him screw up the most out of anyone. Without him, I'd have to pick on another half wit Leaf player

Pete:

Your comparison to Dave Ellett is well taken. But if Bryan sucks the way you describe him, then has your opinion changed after last night? I am not talking about the gimme goal on the 5 on 3, I am talking about the fact that last night he was no worse defensively than some of the other defenders paid his type of money (Sheldon Souray, Kimmo Timmonen and Ed Jovanaski, anyone?)

And if you want to get into numbers, the last three seasons, he has at least 15 goals and 50+ points playing on a team that has big issues scoring goals, and a decent plus minus on a team that is defensively challenged.

Finally, I agree more money is not going to make him play better (and I agree JFJ overpaid him). But if they did not overpay for him, then McCabe would have signed elsewhere and that would leave Pavel Kubina as your new #2 defender.

Face it, no reputable star wants to play in Toronto, and the main reason is what the fans and media do to players like McCabe or Antropov if they underperform for even a few games. Until Leaf fans learn to relax, this team will never win another Cup.

Yes the fans should lay off MC cabe. He's only one of many stiffs on that hopeless bunch.Every year, the "great leafs' fans" have to put the blame somewhere, for their continuing failures, and this year..he's the "chosen one".The "duds" have 3 upcoming games, againt three different teams, just as pityfull as they are..If they manage to fluke off two of those games, then all will be forgotten,AGAIN,and they'll be the greatest thing since bread came sliced.
