Should McCabe be traded?
Sun, February 3, 2008

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?

The Leafs highest paid defenceman has been a target of boo birds in Toronto for his play. Should the Leafs try and trade McCabe?

Have your say in our forum.

Keep McCabe, please... Do not change anything with the Leafs personnel. Keep the GM, JFJ. He is doing a remarkable job.

PS- The Leafs goaltenders are great too. The whole team is solid, Really!

Guess maybe I'm biased but McCabe has never been one of my favorite Leafs, so I'd be very happy to see him traded (if any team would even consider taking him at his salary level).McCabe may be okay offensively, but his abilities there are far outdone by the defensive mistakes he makes. He takes the dumbest penalties of any Leaf (other than Kubina perhaps) and they're usually at a critical time!

And by the way, throw in Kubina with McCabe!

Someone just wrote that MaCabe would have won the Norris a couple of years had he not been hurt?

Well Bruce, I think that there might be a little poop left in your diaper because that has to be the most inane comment ever. The Norris Trophy goes to the "BEST defenseman.....not the "worst".

Was that the same year Bertuzzi was going to win the Lady Byng...but he got suspended? Leaf Nation is Too much. Been watching this McCabe clown for years. He has always been a disaster in his own end of the rink.

He never scores 5 on 5. Usually 5 on 3, after getting umpteen chances.

Admit it ....he is the "u" in useless.

Pete, final comment on this post from me. In my very first post, I stated that I was indeed a Leaf fan --- one of the true fans who will not have a heart attack if the team starts 2-3-2, and one who sees this team for what it really is (it is indeed a less than average team that will miss the playoffs). Being an Oiler fan, you should be able to sympathize with the part about top players not wanting to play in Edmonton, and having a "less than average team" as a result

Who would want him?

After that amazing performance by the Leafs last night, I think we should be talking about other things, like the best route for the Stanley Cup parade. Maybe it could follow the same route as the Pride parade? Or maybe we should hold on for another win. In any case, I'm sure the Toronto Parade Committee has it all figured out. Get those floats ready early!

No.

I would be getting rid of Hal Gill, way before every considering McCabe.

McCabe would have won the Norris a few years back, had he not been hurt. Is there anyone on the team you would rather not see if you are coming across the blue line?

The biggest change in McCabe's game has to do with the League clamp down on obstruction - so no more can opener. Give McCabe time, he'll come back.

This is not just for Ben, I know we all have a little fun with this chat forum but come on. Brian McCabe is an average defencemen and is overpaid at the NHLs minimum salary. Its not about his salary, fans and others pick on him because they love to kick the leafs because leaf fans are just so freaking arrogant they can't admit they have a less than average team. Not only can they not admit it, they go to the other extreme and talk about making the playoffs and winning the stanley cup etc.

Wake up.
Pete, 2007-10-19 13:28:40

McCabe publicly humiliates himself Ben. The rest of us just take some solice in the fact that we don't have to listen to leaf fans every single day. No Ben I am not a Leaf fan but an Oiler fan, I don't jump from team to team as players come and go (Gretzky). Ben, are your sure your not a closet leaf fan.
Pete, 2007-10-19 13:24:19

No Pete, I asked you the question "has your opinion changed after last night" because I wanted to see if you were one of the Leaf bandwagoners (obviously, you're not -- a Sens fan, perhaps?) I am not one of those bandwagon fans, in fact, my original post slams those types of fans who cheer when they win one game, and bring out the daggers for one player when they lose.

That is my point. McCabe, with his short-comings, does not deserve the negative attention he is getting. I think he is a decent defenceman who is getting paid the same rate as others with his ability in the league, and if you disagree, then that is your opinion (but the stats don't agree with you).

You also said Toronto should get 'decent players'. Again, the fan and media environment will always deter top flight players from coming here, so why not support the guys we have on the team? It is better than publicly humiliating them, watch them get traded and see them win the Stanley Cup elsewhere (Larry Murphy, anyone?)

Unless you have coached at the NHL level and have watched every single Leaf game that Carlo (for example) played, your comment about him being a liability "every time he is on the ice" is misguided.
