Should McCabe be traded?
Sun, February 3, 2008

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?

The Leafs highest paid defenceman has been a target of boo birds in Toronto for his play. Should the Leafs try and trade McCabe?

Have your say in our forum.

Same old, same old! They lose one, they're bums, they win one, they'll win the cup!MCcabe's no worse then any other defensemen on that team of corpes.Last year,Raycroft was chosen as the goat for their failures, this year..he's the greatest. My question is:"Why would a "great player" want to play for a town that don't understand that it takes more than one player to win games?".One thing this team's great at:It manages to get the headlines everyday,no matter what.

I can't stand the Leafs but that being said it amazes me after all these years they have never been able to ice a good team consistantly. Look at the new teams that have entered the league in the past number of years and they have had success. In the end I really believe that since they fill their building game after game year after year there is no urgency to build a Stanley Cup winner. Personally I think those fans should just jump ship once and for all and cheer for the other Canadian teams. Leaf Suck

All the Leaf management wants to do is fill the seats with corporate stooges and gullible fans. They don't care about winning just money and this reflects on the players who know they play to a full house every game. I think that they should trade all the pylons on the team (that wouldn't leave too many players left) and start anew.

they need to start at the top, peddie, ferguson, maurice, and then mccabe, gill, and kubina.the problem all these guys make to much money..do what the raptors did get a proven GM..

This isn't the first time he has screwed up a game. Always good for a givaway or blind pass in front of the net, this guy could not play in the OHL, on talent merrit. He is not the only one on the team, however, who should not even be in professional hockey. You can be sure the Leafs will ice a lack-luster attempt at being competitive. They are a joke and at this they are a team!!!!

Yes McCabe should be traded. The Leafs should offer to pay 1 - 2 million a year of his contract just to get rid of him.

Following right behind should be Hal Gil and Pavel Kubina.

The Leafs defence is brutal. Dump salaries now and go after good, proven players. Redden will be a free agent, thats a good start.

Trade Sundin at the deadline also. If they can trade all these players they will free up around 17 - 18 million to sign free agents in the summer.

I dont see any hope in the future with any good, young kids in junior or the AHL.

As a humble westerner, here is your solution. Trade Sundin,he deserves to go to a contender and will bring one or two young players that can play immediately and draft choices. Fire the GM and re vamp your scouting staff with experienced and winning track records, forget about the playoffs and start to rebuild now. Their is a stench coming from the Leafs organization that won't go away until it is buried once and for all, then and only then will you develop a winner for years to come.

The last thing you would want to do is make team decisions based upon the vocal and less than knowledgable fans in the Air Canada Centre. This brings to mind when they ran Larry Murphy out of town and he somehow managed to contribute very productively in a few Stanley Cup wins elsewhere. Basically these so called fans are just looking for someone to blame for the latest futility and, other than Mats Sundin, anyone is fair game.

This being said, I think TO management has attempted to improve the situation in net the last two years, so they are at least trying. Gone are the days where they could just bring a supporting cast of overpaid fossils in to ensure they make the playoffs but fall a few rounds short. In this environment, I would trade McCabe, Sundin and Tucker to get some young talent that might be ready in a few years to go along with their other young players. It's not going to beat a team filled with Crosbys, Malkins and Fleurys, but they should gradually improve and give them cap room to boot.

That and lay off the goalies. The last few games I've noticed Raycroft especially has been left out to dry and has played well despite some losses. Give him a break. The 40 years without a cup are not his fault.
