Should McCabe be traded?
Sun, February 3, 2008

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?

The Leafs highest paid defenceman has been a target of boo birds in Toronto for his play. Should the Leafs try and trade McCabe?

Have your say in our forum.

If Sundin bleeds blue like he would have us all believe he should have waived his not trade clause for the team. He is the only viable commodity that would garner anything in return. The Leafs need something for the future and if getting rid of tired old Mats before he goes out to pasture then use him. That would be the ultimate sacrifice for the team, not this crap about my heart. This is the same team that wants to get rid of him, this is the same team that he said he may not even play for next season. Give us a break. He's not that good. If he was traded to a cup contender and the move failed it would show how average he really is. He is a star on a team that is mired near the bottom, not that tough. As for B. Saunders, buddy get your head out of your arse, McCabe is one of the best, buddy you're delusional. It's fans like you that keep supporting this team and it's average players. No wonder management feels they can sign anyone to big contracts and keep their jobs.

Cannot understand why Mats Sundin is being criticized for not waiving his no-trade clause. It's pretty obvious the media are trying to make Sundin the scapegoat for the Leafs rotten showing this season. Don't blame Mats, it was Ferguson and the Leaf management who should be villified! Some of the 'deals'Ferguson made,eg; Lindros,Allison,Peca, then the most recent no-shows, Kubina,Gill and Blake to a lesser extent. It's likely totally impossible but trade or buy-out Kubina,Gill and McCabe. Good riddance to the three!!

All this makes me sick!!!!!!!A no trade clause is for a reason. Why can't anyone seem to understand this.SUNDINE does not deserve to be treated like a piece of meat, after all he's done for this organization.Brian McCabe and Kaberle have been right up there with the best of defence. So Brian has had not as good a year as last.He still is one of the best. I think everyone should lay off MAT'S Leave him alone,he wants to be a Leaf,I think all Leaf fans should be thankful. The Leafs have had some slumps this year ,has anyone LOOKED at Detroit 6Games in a row,Ottawa 7 in a row ECT.Yah I know your gonna say yah their in the playoffs. My point is as soon as it happens to the Leafs everyone starts slinging dirt.THATS MY POINT.The Leafs have proven they Can beat the Best.Give CREDIT where Credit is do.Thats all

I am 100% agree with #24 should wear another uniform.Too bad he was so smart of getting a no trade contract.

The recent article ... "The Leafs Won't Waiver", is a true testament to 2 things.

1)The long term effect that John Ferguson Jr, dealings will have on this team.

2)The selfish nature of every player on this team, to think that 1 person is more important than the whole team.(and to clarify , I am not talking about Mats our all time scoring leader whom has good reason to retire here)

One only has to look as far as the teachers union to realize that a fish stinks form the head down.

Most teachers actually cost us tax payers a ton in retirement wages, while they go out and start a second career.

Wake up Toronto and stop attending, buying memorabilia, hot dogs etc. until this team is a team. We owe it to ourselves !

yah, let the leafs buyout all their high paid players so part of their salary will hit the cap for double the amount of time. Good thinking, Future GMs

the nick "Voice of Reason" appears to be a contradiction in terms. Clearly you have no idea as to the implications of massive buyouts as you suggest.

Among the ones you name, Belak is a UFA this summer and only makes $650,000 so why buy him out now? Just don't re-sign him.

Each of Gill, Antropov, Bell, and Raycroft have one year left after this at a total salary of $8,251,667.

Kubina and Ponikarovsky each has two years left after this for a total salary of $14,210,000.

McCabe and Tucker each has three years after this at a total salary of $26,250,000.

Blake has FOUR years after this at a total salary of $16,000,000.

Add it all up and you'd be buying out some $65 million dollars. The formula, involving two-thirds of each salary, is spread out over the terms of the contract as hits against the cap, so you'd wind up with a lot of "Robbie Earls."

George O'Leary, 2008-02-14 10:42:23

Who would want him?
Paul Boal, 2008-02-13 10:25:35

No way! Just buy him out. It's better to lose part of his salary and not have to deal with him any more than to try to convince him to be moved. While you're at it, buy out Tucker, Kubina, Blake, Belak, Gill, Antropov, Bell, Ponikarovsky, and Raycroft. Time to start focusing on the future (Robbie Earl) and developing young players.
