What's your favourite comeback story? Tue, October 16, 2007
When it comes to athletes and disease, there are two lists.
The first is populated with tragic figures such as Brian Piccolo, Reggie Lewis and Lou Gehrig -- athletes who never recovered from the ailments which struck them down in the prime of their careers. They will remain forever young in the memories of sports fans ... sad reminders that, sometimes, no amount of fame, vitality or athletic prowess can alter fate's cruel plan.
But there is also a second list, one which contains the names of sports stars who managed to battle back from life-threatening illness. Whether because of good treatment, a good attitude or good luck, their careers didn't end on the day they were diagnosed. They vanquished their afflictions and returned -- better than ever, in some cases -- to the field of play.
Do you have a favourite sports comeback story, in which the athlete returned to play professionally or otherwise? Tell us your athlete that battled back.

When I first saw the title of the article I figured Saku Koivu was a guarantee top 3. I am shocked he didn't even make the list!

Saku Koivu: For a successful return to hockey after a battle with cancer and then for nearly losing an eye in a playoff game. I'm surprised he was forgotten.

Lance Armstrong is a blood doper and should be excluded! How about Saku Koivu on the list? He is at least as high as Lemieux, he even had his best numbers AFTER his cancer!

What happened to Saku Koivu on that list??? He should be in the top 10

Why limit the list to professional athletes only? What about Terry Fox or Rick Hansen?

How you can exclude Saku Koivu off this list is astounding. He found out he had cancer right before the start of the season and went under harsh treatments to make it back right before the playoffs and lead his team to a forst round upset of the League leading Bruins. The ovation upon his return was one of the most emotiional nights in Montreal hockey history.

How can you not include Saku Koivu on this list? He comes back from stomach cancer AND a devastating eye injury.

Magic Johnson on that list....please....Lemieux should be second and Johnson near the end of the list....perhaps if he kept his little guy in pants more his career would of lasted longer....you cheat on your wife and karma gets to ya...
