Is Sundin the best Bud ever?
Thu, October 11, 2007

Mats Sundin was credited with an assist that gave him a club-record 917 points Thursday night, but television replays did not show him touching the puck on the scoring play.

The announced crowd of 19,319 gave Toronto's captain a standing ovation.

Will Toronto fans remember Mats Sundin as the greatest Leaf of all time? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin surpasses Sittler

I hope Leaf management reads these comments so they'd realize how they have not been able to pull the wool over everyones eyes by making them believe Sundin's this great captain and leader that he isn't. Maybe then they'd get rid of him and concentrate on building a "REAL" team interested in winning the Cup, and not just making the playoffs in 8th place.

If they feel so bad for Sundin and feel like they owe him something (as if his salary is not enough) give him a job at Leafs TV, so Glen Healy (another blowhard) won't have to travel far to kiss his feet.

I am not a Leaf fan at all. Matts Sundin has never been a motivator. Hence the problem of a so called leader. So what he's scored more goals and more points than any other Leaf. Look how long he's been in the league? And yet still no Stanley. As far as I'm concerned if you produce in sports you get paid. He hasn't got things done on the bench or the dressing room. He is not a motivator of people. The only way fans will remember him as the greatest player is if they win one. Darcy Tucker as much as I dislike him he would have been a better choice for captain on the Leafs. At least he stirs up emotions minute after minute. Sundins boring.

Sundin the best Leaf ever? No. Sundin is a very good player but not in the same boat as we believe is the best Leaf ever. Through all decades of Leafs action, the Leaf that wears the "C" is given the label but he does not stand in the way of Sittler, Keon, the Big M, Conacher, Kennedy, Clancy, Barilko, Bower, Broda, Kelly, Armstrong, Salming and Horton. In my opinion, there are many players that are thought of before Sundin. I have a tough time putting Sundin in that class although I do respect his accomplishments. Let's not forget, if Sittler hadn't been treated the way he was by Punch Imlach and Harlod Ballard in the latter part of his years with the Leafs, Sittler would have been the fist Leaf to score 500, get 1000 points and forever and a day be known as the greatest Leaf ever. Sundin is fortunate to stay the time in Leaf land to even be considered for such a nomination of greatest Leaf ever. But truly, the greatest Leaf ever is Conn Smythe. Without him, his vision and dream, we would not have Leafs Nation. Go Leafs Go.

No... Just no so he has a few more points then the rest but a great team leader is more then that. ya gotta have the whole deal including heart and passion.. Clarke maybe but not Sundin

Are you kidding me? In Montreal our "Best"ever comes with real qualifications such as how many times they'd smooched Stanley, and if they'd have spent their careers chasing him in the red, white and blue. Toronto has won enough times to set these kind of standards. Sundin is a really good player, but best bud? NOT !
HabsFan, 2007-10-15 20:33:02

Sundin..hardly....I'm not even a Leaf fan but he's not even close.....Salming defence....Sittler a gimme, Bower a shoo in.....better than the BIG M..haha, a better leader than Clarke,as if............should I continue? Aside from the fact if your 20+ and know the Leafs will not win a cup in your lifetime, why even ask such a dumb ass ?

James: Sundin wasn't even on the 1992 or 1993 Maple Leafs. He was still with Quebec.
Gordon, 2007-10-15 17:36:39

He could very well be the best ever. He has never been on a good team and never has had good wingers. All the players other fans hjave listed here as the best ever all played on either strong team or strong lines.
Ben, 2007-10-15 14:58:05

Dougie Gilmour by far! He led by example, never shirked meeting the press, made no excuses, was all heart and bled blue!
Leonie, 2007-10-15 14:41:41

Keon. It was strange to see him in Toronto last season. He only received a modest ovation from the crowd. Too bad. If Zidane, or Gretsky, or Orr failed to win a championship with their respective teams, they would never be considered great. Keon won four cups. Sittler, Clark, Sundin: zero. Enough said.
