Can the NHL eliminate head shots?
Thu, October 11, 2007

Philadelphia Flyers' Jesse Boulerice expects to receive a lengthy suspension after taking a match penalty for cross-checking Vancouver Canucks centre Ryan Kesler in the head Wednesday night.

"I reacted in a bad way -- the wrong way," said Boulerice.

Can the NHL eliminate head shots? Have your say in our forum.

Easy solution...If you hit with intent to injure, your career in the NHL should be over.No gray area, just get rid of the goons.A career in Hockey is worth millions of $. If an automatic end to that windfall is mandentory, a player might think before acting like a goon.

If the NHL really wants to get this out of the game, and I believe they do, then they need to get everyone's attention. How about deducting 1 or even 2 points for any major suspensions (10 games or more).....

Extreme but would make coaches, players and management think more about who is on the ice...

Boulerice is lucky he only got 20. His last act in the OHL was almost an instant replay of his latest brain cramp. I'm shocked that his OHL cheapshot on the Guelph player has not been recalled in all of the hype surrounding this incident. He is a garbage player. Beer leaguers everywhere are thanking teams like the Flyers for keeping him in pro hockey.

This is so out of hand it is ridiculous. It has become like the movie rollerball where killing an opponent may just happen soon enough. This is not hockey it is not a sport, it is assualt period. I realize that it becomes a slippery slope when a good hit may find itself in the courts but this is not a grey area this is cold blooded assault. It disgraces the game, the sport and the country. Start putting criminals behind bars.

kk .. suspension 25 games is a good place to start.

Now Fred not sure what you been watching but Canada has a National Women Hockey Team that kicks BUTT big time world over and on hockey ability alone could wipe the nose of ny NHL team,

But sigh they are "girls" so I guess they don't count ... NOT ...

Fred makes a point that I have agreed with ever since this particular rule was adopted. Get rid of the instigator rule! If you do that the sport will go back to the time when hockey players respected each other. These headhunters would not get away with any crap if they knew they would have the crap beat out of them!

Follow up to "fred". I REST MY CASE!! Is this the way real men and hockey "insiders" write? If it is I guess we shouldn't be too suprised they go around beating each other over the head with clubs! I'm watching the Red Sox and Indians tonight!Manny and Papi, now they know what to do with clubs!!

The league loves this stuff. They get publicity (ie. all publicity is good), they get money from the fines as a bonus, AND they get to set what the fine is. What would their incentive to stop it be?
Fred Ward, 2007-10-13 15:51:11

First time for any kind of head shot is half the season, second time its a full season third time life time suspension.

This is getting way out of control, someone is going to end up either in a wheelchair or dead.
Jimmy, 2007-10-13 15:38:11

It may have to take the death of the player for the league to wake up and do something. Philly have always catered to goon hockey, ever since the 70's.

Maybe the Canadian and American police agencies should look into charging these players (with or without teams consent and/or permission) with criminal act.

Even better people, stop going to the games.
