What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

What really needs to happen for the Leafs is to rid themselves of their scouts and Maurice. The present team needs proper conditioning, they are out of shape.

Well said George....totally agreee....
Marlyn, 2008-01-24 06:08:39

The ONLY thing that needs absolute dismantling is that friggin IDIOT Peddie !!!!!!!!!
Scott, 2008-01-23 23:59:18

I have to agree with Marlyn - and consequently disagree with you as well Ed. I also have to wonder what all of a sudden makes Fletcher a genius cure-all! It was one thing to buy your way to success pre-lockout, as long as you worked for an owner with deep pockets, and something else again to do it with, not only the limitations of a cap, but with long-term contracts that no one else in their right mind will take off your hands. Which leaves Sundin as his only real marketable commodity since he is a true playoff rental for any team acquiring him, and without having to face a $6 million plus salary for another (or more) years. As they would with any of Blake, Raycroft, Tucker, McCabe, Gill, and Kubina - maybe not $6 mil in each case but still pretty hefty for what the new team would be stuck with. Besides, didn't they fire Fletcher once for doing a poor job, and wasn't he recently canned by Phoenix for much the same reason?

So, when you boil it down, it doesn't really matter if Peddie sticks his nose in or not. Any way you slice and dice it, Fletcher and whoever takes over this summer is stuck with those salaries until a) they run out or b) someone manages to convince the board that it would be in their best interest to buy them out.

Somehow, I can't see a collection like that being enticed by the prospect of maybe - and I emphasize maybe - a deep run in the playoffs for an additional $30 million or so in revenue IF they have to fork over a definite $20 to $25 million in buyout cash.

Also, while those suggestions elsewhere in this thread that they deal those albatrosses for high draft choices sound pleasing to the ear, just name me ONE team that would take any of the "Untradable Six" under ANY circumstances. Just one.

The one constant is the leafs suck!!!! and they have for 41 years, its the fans in toronto that walk around like a bunch of cattle being led to slaughter.. when you watch them walk into the ACC they have know idead that they are the ones paying the salaries of the players, Peddie JFJ and others...so before you fans of Toronto complain and keep buying tickets, let me sell you some ocean front property in Edmonton!!!!
jimf, 2008-01-23 16:02:11

Peddie should have dropped the axe on himself. So they dump JFJ and form a commitee to replace Cliff who replaced John.

Typical Leafs. What is the one constant in all this?

PEDDIE

Sorry Ed, but have to totally disagree with you...as long as Richard Peddie is at the top, the Leaf organization will never succeed. I don't care who the GM is, Peddie will always interfere, and the rest of the Hockey world will not take us seriously..read Steve Simmons article today...he says it all...Peddie is on the committee to find a new GM ???? and the circus continues....
Marlyn, 2008-01-23 11:36:52

Hear me now and believe me later, Fletcher won't put up with any crap from Pettie so don't worry leaf fans, Fletcher is one hard nosed business/hockey man. It was his way or the highway in Calgary, he'll do the same in Toronto and make no mistake, you're in good hands now.......
Ed, 2008-01-23 11:26:57

Good move signing Fletcher.Put him on a line with side-show-Bob,and Poniuselesky, and he'll take the laffs over the top.

I don't think the Leafs need to totally dismantle the team. They need to try to unload some cumbersome contracts, which won't be easy, and the core of the team must have a couple of years with lottery picks to change that core. High draft picks is the most certain way to reload. I am very concerned that Maple Leaf board directives may interfer with that retooling process. During Fletcher's introduction to the media Richard Pettie said "in todays NHL, a team needs to build for the present and future". That was the company line with John Ferguson at the healm. That is why Ferguson failed. I agree with Fletcher's quoted statement from that same media introduction:

"Times have certainly changed and so has the way teams do business in the NHL". "Today if you want to compete you have to draft well and you have to develop your own core of young players," said Fletcher. "While each team might get its share of one or two free agents with the cap system, you have to have that base of solid young players that you draft and develop yourself.
