What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

I've been a long time Leafs fan (since 1969!) so I've seen the ups and downs, but this version of the Leafs is NOT going to win the cup (and THAT should be the goal - not just making the playoffs). The blame has to be put in front of JFJ. He should have dumped the high priced salaries last year and gone for young players before the trade deadline like so many teams. McCabe should have been dumped for young players and draft picks. I would have dumped Raycroft too (can always pick up a free agent goalie - and JFJ was looking elsewhere anyways). And slow Antropov should have been traded for some hockey pucks!! We're in for a rough year. I almost hope we don't make the playoffs so that JFJ can finally be punted. Why doesn't Maurice work on the powerplay? Hire someone to get some creativity. You can get lots of points if your PP works. Sheesh!

It's never too early to write off the Leafs.

I'm a die hard Leaf fan, probably always will be. But they aint goin anywhere this year. Get rid a Feruson, all he has done is make the Leafs worse buy signing guys comin off a career year to long term contracts. Try tradin McCabe and see how many takers ya get.

Does the whole team have leukemia?

It is going to be another long season for Leaf fans! Not only will the Cup drought continue, I firmly believe they are well on their way to starting a sustained run for consecutive seasons where they miss the playoffs! I have almost had the remaining Leaf loyalty sucked out of me by this year's edition of the Blue and White.

Leafs problem has been the same for the last forty years. Arrogance, they think they should win cause they're the Leafs. Actually when I think about it, not much different from Hab fans.

someone asked a good questions there, "The Sens can be competitive? Why not the Leafs?" and then somone made a point about how, because of the fans, the Leafs management doesn't have to have a good team, and that is the answer right there, the Leafs don't have to be competitive! they'll make millions no matter what, Harold Ballard knew that years ago...and as twisted as it may be, that is why Leaf fans are great sports fans, they'll stick with their team. Not like Ottawa fans who have to have a winning team to cheer for, because once the lean years come, Ottawa fans bail...it's happened time and time again in this city and the only reason the Sens are still here is because they are winning (remember not too long ago when it appeared they were going to be sold). Ottawa is not a great sports town, too many fair-weather fans. And another thing, now that I'm going, Sens fans are not true, loyal fans...for the simple reason that they've abandoned a previous team that they were fans of to cheer for the Sens...I mean, what kind of fan abandons their team? only the fair-weather wagon jumpers that's who (except of course for the little kids who started as Sens fans, they're ok)

The Makebeleafs are arguably competing right now, what happens with a few injuries? They have no depth what so ever. I for one am happy that Toronto fans will get their tee times a lot earlier next spring.

I'm getting tired of the same old, same old. I've been a Leaf fan since 1973,and it does not matter what year it is because its the same thing every year, the players making the usual bold statements about what they have to do to win games, blah, blah, blah. Lets be honest same crap different year.....

There just isn't a lot to build on. They need to dump some of the salary they have tied up. 18 million for a pylon defence is insane.

Then compare Sundin and Tucker to Alfredson and Spezza. Same money tied up but look at the overall result over the first 4 games for these 4 players.

I can't see the Leafs being competative for 2-3 more years the way they are going.
