What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Q: What is the Leafs' biggest problem?

A: Their Fans!

The Leafs' biggest problem is thinking they are competitive.

JFJ is the biggest problem because he can t tell a good hockey player from a bad one. He thinks if a player asks for 4M he is worth 4M.

What a sad organization. Useful and incompetent top and middle mgt.

As I have said before Sundin is not a leader. He is out for Mats and Mats only. Where's all the chatter on the bench to motivate the rest of the team? Come on even a 5 million dollar player can muster up a few words of encouragement? He's no leader and he has been the Leafs biggest problem for years. And I have never been a fan, but I've seen what he has created. Not much.

What could be more simple than the fact that they are the Leafs? Is this not the same garbage that the Leaf Brass puts us through? It amazes me that people still pay for the expense tickets, the merchandise and the autographs fees of the players. My suggestion-same as the last 7 years-get rid of Sundin. He plays until he statistics are high enough for him and the coasts through the season. Trade him for something. If the Islanders will pay $75 million for Yashin surely, we can find a team willing to pay for Sundin and we get some GOOD young prospects.

The leafs biggest problem is they're in the NHL, I knew Tucker would be injured within the first 20 games, thanks, I made some money........

When I read all the disgruntled Leaf fans' comments they invariably include the phrase "trade McCabe", or "trade Kubina," or "trade Gill," or "trade Raycroft" - and on and on and on, as if this was the simple solution to their problems and why can't the idiots in charge see the same reasoning? Well, helloooo. Trade them where? Do you think the rest of the league is idiotic? The team is stuck with them until the contracts run out. Do you really think that by bringing in, say, a Bowman to run things that that alone will change their fortunes overnight? IT ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. THE FANS ARE STUCK WITH THIS BUNCH FOR AT LEAST THREE, MAYBE FOUR MORE YEARS.

THAT'S the leafs biggest problem. Contracts they cannot move. Their only marketable commodity right now is Sundin (and maybe Kaberle). But there's little point in trying to move Sundin now. Not with him on a one-year contract and teams aware they can pluck him in the off season as a UFA without giving anything up in return.

The Leafs are about on a par with Phoenix and Atlanta, and probably not even in the same ballpark as Washington, Boston, and Florida. That's the hard, bold reality.

I saw some people in the crowd with their faces painted blue and I had to laugh.

When are the people of Toronto going to wake up and realize they're getting hosed?

Sub-par team on the ice and overpriced tickets.

Ask yourself people, if you performed this badly at YOUR JOB year after year, do you think you'd still have a j-o-b?

GO SENS

It's way to early. This is October people.

The Leafs suck! I cant even watch a game from start to finish they are that bad.

The defence is brutal. McCabe, Kubina and Gill should be traded asap.

The forwards arent much better. Pohl, Battaglia, Antropov, Ponikarovsky, all minor leaguers. Thats almost half the team that should really be playing in the AHL but because of salary cap issues ( overpaying stiffs like McCabe, Sundin and Kubina ) they dont have the money to spend on good, young players for the future.

Leaf fans need to finally wake up and smell the coffee, stop supporting this crappy team until they start building a team that can not just sneak into the playoffs ( if they do make it on the last day of the season ) but can be a true cup contender.
