What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

There is no need for more Leaf bashing. Fergie out, Fletch in. We all know JFJr made some stinker deals, but most GM's have those in their pockets. JF was doomed from the start, but he doesn't lace up the skates. The Leafs defence, has been simply comical at times, not even knowing where the opposing team is standing, let alone skating. Kubina gone, Kaberle and McCabe stay. Get one good D and one solid stay at home D. Send some of the rookies back for training with the Marlies. As much as I love Sundin, who is a class act all around, he has to go. For his and Leafs sake. His value is at the highest peak now, so get all you can. He only has a 1 year shelf life left, and makes a great rent a player to get the cup for a contending team. Tucker out Stajan out Bell out, Ponikarovsky out. Even the worst kid on the team gets lucky and scores. Keep the hard working Blake. He takes corners like a pitbull. If the Leafs had any sense, play Raycroft and lose all the way to last place in the league, and hopefully get a Tavares like star

Toronto maple leafs are a hockey team? No kidding !! Based on what I heard Canadians say about them,I was positive they were in the vacuum cleaner business.

It's all good ... JFJ is gone and The Greatest One comes to the rescue in the last minute and is on the way to leading the Leafs to the Stanley Cup. All is well in Leaf Nation and my travel plans to Toronto for the June parade have all been made. It's a wonderful time to be a Leafs fan!

I just read that MLSE has given Cliff Fletcher total autonomy while carrying out his duties as GM. To me this is more of an admission by MSLE that they were meddling in the decisions of previous GMs.

And if this is so, then they have to share in some of the blame for the present state of their hockey club. But, unlike Ferguson, who are they accountable to? The shareholders of course and so long as the business is thriving they could care less if their decisions worked out.

Now, a lot of people will say that Ferguson had to go. I have to agree with that, but at the same time I think MLSE and Richard Peddie have, at the very least, their fall guy. Yet, the MLSE chain of command has to admit they oversaw the decisions he made.

But we can't print that now can we?

Contrary to popular belief, the Leafs NEED to be dismantled. Fergi was a start, Peddie needs to be replace or atleast whoever is incoming needs to have Autonomy in every sense. No matter how you slice it, this team does not have what it takes to get anywhere. They have good players, but they do not play good together, the defence does not understand the concept and never has of defending a lead. If Toskala had a solid line of defence in front of him, he will definitely be a solid goaltender for them. McCabe, Kaberle and the works need to go. They have been together for a long time and if they haven't figured out a way to work together by now, they never will. Again, not to say they are bad players, but together they can't get the job done. Any team that wins a cup does so as a team, not good offence one night, ok defence the next. They have never had enough consistency to ever make a run at the cup and won't as long as they remain the same! They need an complete overhaul and a whole lot of fresh, young and experienced players to make this team a serious contender. All they've ever doen is dump someone here and there and add someone here and there and they are worse now then before, that philsophy does not work! Burke completely rebuilt the Ducks in two years and won a cup, what does that tell you? The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results! Sound like any team we know?

It is essential that the club overhaul their scouting system and try to bring in some people with the insight needed to stabilize the department and try to invigorate some much needed youth with a promising upside. This club had fallen far behind more forward thinking clubs in this league and the cupboard is bare so to speak with no immediate prospects prepared to step into the void.

Well as a Diehard leafs fan, thru thick and thin. This is a good start. Replacing JFJ with Fletcher is a start. Now all Peddie needs to do is stay out of it and let fletcher run. Unload some of the non-performing contracts and use the $ to acquire new/young talent. As for Mats!! He is the heart of the team. If Maurice cant cut it replace him with an old style coach like Burnsie or Quinn. And get Scottie Bowman behind the wheel when Fletcher steps down. The leafs for the most part have the Talent but the Management is reminiscent of the Ballard Era. Nuff Said.

don't worry about blowing up the leafs they are finally willing to face the music & dance, no more quick fix, just do it!

Haven't the Leafs already been dismantled and it's the Leaf fans that are in denial? They were above average a few years ago but now they are the worst team in the league, so all this talk about untradeable players means they just don't understand the situation they are in. It's kind of like Washington a few years back. They go to the finals, get Jagr and the sky is the limit. But the funny thing is the team sucked. So what did they do, sit around and talk about who is protected? No, they dump Jagr and his salary as well as any other commodities, get lucky in the lottery and get Ovechkin. A few years later and they are in a much better situation.

Face it, if it wasn't for Antropov acting like a good hockey player for 1/2 the year and for the fact that 1/2 the Leaf games have been against the other team's backup goalie, the Leafs would be at the bottom. There's one month to look for the best offer for Sundin, McCabe, Tucker, Kubina and whoever. Let's see what Fletcher can do.
Rick W., 2008-01-24 09:21:25

Hey Fletcher is 100% with a 1 out 1 record since taking over. I can see it now, the parade down Bay Street is already in the works for June. Its cup time in Toronto again. All we needs is about 50 more wins. Ha Ha Ha Ha , not likely.

Sorry just an illustion, I must still be drunk.
