What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

The biggest problem with this team is their defencive system does no match the type of team they have.

Further, the Leafs haven't had a defensive system since Pat Burns.

Two changes would make this team a playoff team and potentially a contender.

New coach (Pat Burns anyone)

and

Toskala has to be the starter.

Ownership is the biggest problem with management a close second.

If these owners dont care about winning they should sell the team to someone that will bring pride back to one of the most storied franchises in league history.

Its sad seeing a team with so much history look so bad. 40 + years without a cup and it could be another 40 + years before they win again. Every hockey department should be cleaned out now and let the rebuilding begin. The longer they wait to start the rebuilding the longer it will be before they are a serious cup contender, not just a team that makes the playoffs as an 8th place team.

I am on the brink of giving up on this organization, they have been saying playoffs and cup contenders for the last few tears when a true hockey fan knows they arent a playoff calibre team never mind a true cup contender.

The Carlton street cash box lives on its just at a new location!

I do like the comment about it being the Leaf fans that are the problem. Comments like "Kubina is a bum" or "get rid of McCabe" suggests that they are a bit deluded, if not actually the problem. There always has to be a scapegoat, like Larry Murphy years ago, to shoulder the blame and getting rid of that player will "fix" things. This is not true.

The Leafs have managed their team for the past 20 years at the behest of the heckling horde, always "one player" short of winning the cup. This team isn't even 10 players short of winning, but the fans are so separated from reality they don't realize it. In the partial games I have seen recently, the goalies have been hung out to dry and the Leaf defense is just abysmal. Aside from Antropov's miraculous reemergence as a hockey player (so far) and the stead PPG play of Sunding, the offense is just not very good. Better to rebuild now, but with the fans demanding a parade this year, that is not an option. So winning the Cup is no longer an option.

Other teams that do win the cup are allowed to tinker. Anaheim invested in Neidermayer, brought back Selanne, stuck with Giguere through thick and thin, drafted well and gave their young guys a shot and then topped up with Pronger. All of these are not options in Toronto. Old guys like Tucker have a career year and then cannot be traded because they did, rather than getting value for him. Sundin will languish here because he is untouchable, unless he breaks the strings himself and leaves town for success elsewhere. The fans have only themselves to blame.

Its hard to hate the leafs these days.... Keep it up Leaf Nation, as long as you demand to make the quick fix you will always suck.... REBUILD ..

Long term success starts from the goalie position and moves out toward forward positions.

Toronto's two netminders have below .900 save percentages and as was mentioned before last night's telecasts, the defensive zone coverage looks like the Keystone Cops!!

Lots of goals for + no defensive end ability = big tease for fans!

The Leafs are like a sleazy spouse: they score alot, but they're never home when they need to be!

Time to kick ass in practice, I would say. Time for benchings and playing the players who skate hard the whole game.

Oh woe is Leaf nation [as usual].

In one word lazy. If they put half as much effort as they did in last night's final 5 minutes, they would be a 70% better team.

It is easy to see why Scotty Bowman does not want to be part of this team! Management (Pettie and Tannenbaum) are only concerned about money, The GM has given up too many no trade contracts and the coach cannot inspire any passion from these players.

Some players have a natural born talent for the game, but any knucklehead that can skate can be taught to play defence. What does that say about the teacher? (Maurice)

This team needs a shakeup, starting with our losing coach. Check his record. Only once has he ever been to the playoffs!

The players are a better bunch than the previous two years record would indicate, but the hierarchy has to inspire passion and desire to win, somethings the Leaf team desperatly needs.

What the Leafs need to do is get rid of Ferguson and rehire Pat Quinn as President and let him fill in the rest of the spots below him!!

get rid of Kubina !!!! and Ferguson !!
