What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

No no no, keep them all, dont trade Sundin, Bob Coles will have to learn all new names which he cant. Have you ever tried to put fallen leafs back on a tree. Toronto deserves the Leafs.

All you die-hard loser fans out there who buy the overpriced tickets and plunk yourself down in front of the screens to watch this long-term pathetic team only make your own situation worse and continue to line the pockets of MLSE. There is NO BENEFIT to them to do anything to make this team into a winner - when will you dolts realize that. Sure, they may make a few moves as part of a shell game, but let's get serious -this is a business about making money. It's not a sport any more in Toronto, and obviously no one cares because they keep cheering for the LAUGHS and selling out games.

The leafs are on their way to 50 years of losing. They need to get rid of sundin and most of the team and rebuild. They are gonna lose over the next decade if they don't, why not take the decade and rebuild and least they might have a chance. It is the players that suck not the coach or the manager or even head office. People need to stop going to the games, save some money and watch them lose at home on TV. When the big brass start losing money maybe they will do something. Put Team Canada in leafs jerseys and you can bet they will do a lot better, because they know what it means to win for Canada or a Canadian team.

Just to be clear, Burke did NOT rebuild the Ducks. Brian Murray did all the work bringing in all the excellent young players, all Burke did was get Pronger and that deal pretty much fell into his lap. I give credit where it's due and Burke deserves almost none for Anaheim's success. or were you talking about him losing Penner because he signed Bertuzzi for 4 million a year? or his latest brainchilds: bring back Neidermeyer and Selanne because Anaheim sucks without them lol. Yeah, Burke sure is a genius.

As for the Leafs, I've said it before and will again: they suck, blow the team up, take whatever you can get for those ridiculous contracts, revamp scouting and drafting, tolerate Fletcher for the remainder of this season and accept the fact that the Leafs will have to suck for at least a couple years. Too many band-aid solutions have put the organization in a bad hole, and some serious hurting will have to occur for them to be good in the long run.

Hope they never make it out of the basement, looks good on the toronto sports writers and looser leaf fans. Us westerners hate the leafs and organization.

Stick-to-itivenss is great as long as you are sticking to the right plan. The Leafs haven't had the right plan in years and are going nowhere.

The Leafs have a good goalie - Toskals. I wouldn't mind if the Leafs cleared house and went into the dumpster for the next 2 or 3 years as long as there is some hope on the other side of becoming a real Stanley Cup contender.

You need to have a stable of good, young players with a few free agents thrown in. The Leafs are pretty bare right now in terms of good, young players.

Hopefully, Cliff will set the ship in the right direction for the next GM.
Gordon S., 2008-01-26 11:44:50

How can you seriously suggest blowing up the Loafs? What happened to tradition, history and plain old stick-to-itiveness? How about trading Sundin and a first round pick to Boston for Tim Thomas...c'mon laff's nation all you really need is a good goalie and you can plan the parade route. Oh, while you're at it throw some more multi-year, no trade contracts at any player on the team who doesn't yet have one.

As much as I love to see the hogtown hopeless wallow in the quicksand of incompetence, there is a part of me that would like to see someone (anyone) in Toronto actually own up to the fact that the Leafs need a complete overhaul and have the guts to tell the Toronto faithful that yes our team is going to have to suck for the next three years if things are ever going to get better. I'm not holding my breath that Trader Cliff is any more likely to do that than anyone else.

Alfie for Conn Smythe!

Still flinging bricks anonymously eh "Alfie?" Don't they have a Pacific island named after people like you who skulk behind fictitious names? What was it? Oh yeah - NoBallsAtoll.

I mean, seriously, isn't that just an extension of shouting "nyahh nyahh" from a safe distance or ringing doorbells and running away?

Reeko I agree with everything you say except about JFJ. He should be sued for misrepresenting himself as a GM. If he was earning $800k/year, he should be allowed to keep 50k of that and be forced to return the rest. We know how incompetent he was in icing the team but putting yes men into mgt, destroying the medical and scouting staff should be grounds for a suit in my opinion. And Peddie should be held accountable for hiring JFJ. If he asks for a reference it should be denied!
