What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Bringing up Justin Pogge would be the worst mistake the Maple Leafs could make. He's not ready for the NHL and the way Toronto plays defence, it would shatter his confidence. He is not even close to being at the same point as Carey Price.

Complacency. By the "owners" of MLSE. By JFJr and his "scouts". But most of all by the fans in their continuing support for this under-acheiving team.

Forbes says the Leafs are worth more than $400 MILLION! Why? Because us numbskulls keep on buying into the lie that "this year will be different". Why change anything? Hang on to the edge of your seat boys...we're going to make the playoffs and compete for the Cup! Gimme a break...I've followed the Leafs since the beginning of the 1966-67 season, the only cure for the complacency "upstairs" is to turn away until the Teachers Fund sells to SOMEONE who cares about hockey.

It is truly a shame that one of the most storied franchises in all of sports in now a laughing stock.

Ben, I agree wholeheartedly with your observations of some of those other so-called "comments." In my own defence, I can only say that I will never stoop to the ubiquitous (and useless) "so and so SUCK" - "so and so RULE" - or "AWESOME" among many more such puerile drivel which add nothing to any otherwise intelligent argument.

If you scroll back you'll see that my views on the Leafs woes center primarily around their pathetic draft record, dating back more than 20 years, and as far as I'm concerned that is at the core of their current problems. Now, others can blame it on the GM's, which is fair ball since they have the last word, but I think the scouts should also be singled out for some pretty awful recommendations.

"What is the Leafs biggest problem?"

In one word spelled out!

D-E-F-E-N-S-E in that they don't have one!

Simple as that!

Well George, I can definitely relate to the part about having a Hamilton TV station on basic cable (so we have Sheila Copps to blame for that, eh?)

So I now understand your frustration with the media outlets. I won't deny that more than half of them are pro-Leaf (Sportsnet being a bit of an exception). But there are also a lot of ex-pat Toronto natives and/or Leaf fans living in other cities, and networks like CBC are mindful of that demand when they set their programming. To be fair, CBC also gives Western Canadian teams equal billing in the second half of their nation-wide "double header". The Habs get a regular national feed on the CBC's french language station each week. The only team that seems to get the short end of the air-time is the Sens, and that shortfall usually ends in round 2 of the playoffs when Ottawa is the only Canadian team left standing.

I don't mind constructive criticism from fans of other teams, but take a look at some of the comments posted on this forum and you can see why I responded the way I did earlier.

The Leafs aren't very good. There, I've said it. For a not very good team they are not playing too badly, they just need to accept their lack of quality players and adopt a style of play that is more defensive.

And no, Pogge is not Price. There are two NHL goalies already playing for the Leafs, so to think a minor leaguer, no matter how good he is, will "fix" things is delusional. Just keep repeating, "the Leafs are not very good, so they will lose a lot, but that's OK..."
Rick W., 2007-11-08 14:45:33

Why not bring up Pogge? no different then Price, may be a savour?
Darren T., 2007-11-08 13:33:57

Well now, Ben, that is a refreshing change from some previous posts, and now I understand where you're coming from. But if you look at the original question it asks "what is the Leafs biggest problem?" It doesn't limit responses to "Leaf fans only." As to why there is such venom sent TO's way from across the country, put yourself in our spot. Here in Ottawa our basic cable (BASIC) has four Toronto stations and, to add insult to injury, one from Hamilton. HAMILTON. The ONLY reason it's there is because when Sheila Copps was the minister responsible for the CRTC among other things, she had Rogers remove CFCF Montreal from our basic cable and toss in Hamilton so she could keep tabs on local events while Parliament was in session. In addition, EVERY sports show we get shoved at us originates in Toronto, and EVERY member of that show is, deep down, a shill for the Leafs. But if that isn't bad enough, even the CBC - and every Canadian tax payer forks over money to support that money pit - is filled with unabashed Leaf fans, from Cole to Cherry to McLean. And, with the Leafs being primarily a joke for the past few seasons, and yet thrown at us every Saturday night, you wonder why there's such venom from other parts of the country?
