What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

What?! The leafs aren't a shoe in for the cup? I thought that why they got the new GM. I agree with ED lets talk about a team that isn't in the crapper.

This is becoming redundant, can you please stop the leafs soap opera, being the centre of the Hockey universe you would think you would have something more to discuss then this ongoing dialogue, I mean really, this is getting sickening, apart from Toronto and the surrounding area we out west could care less for this continuing saga, Sundin this, Peddie that, this is right up there with Britany and Paris, much ado about nothing......

twalsh, I don't know where you got your information, but Les Canadiens never contemplated leaving Montreal due to lack of fan support. That is utter hogwash.

They DID however muse about leaving the province of Quebec due to the onerous tax structure they face from the province and the city. I'm not sure that that's even been resolved to their satisfaction, but it's a fact that, while they pay a hefty tax on the arena, many U.S. clubs are getting a free ride in that respect (isn't that what Kansas City has been dangling in front of an owner willing to move his club to that city?).

Listening to all the so called hockey experts and those who laugh at leaf fans make me laugh quiet frankly. One would think that the leafs are the only N.H.L. team to have to start over. Lets be clear here, 75% of N.H.L. teams are mediocore, leafs are only one of these. Nothing wrong starting with fresh blood, everyone has done it including the Habs who by the way nearly departed Montreal a few years back because of lack of Fan support, at least leaf fans are with their team in both good and bad times, can't say the same for bandwagon hab-not fans. Go leaf Go and good luck.

i am getting so sick of hearing about SUNDIN.. look back when the leafs did make the playoffs. i think it was 1927 but anyways he did nothing, he disappeared didnt like the close checking and getting hit.. he will disapper quicker than chris angel or david copperfield..she is a different game in the playoffs...

If you were to examine most other NHL teams you would quickly become aware that MLSE is a business and not at all serious about the Leaf's success.

Look who's at the top...a grocer who thinks he has hockey acumen. Make this a true sport business and the Leafs can start building like, say, the Black Hawks. I actually like to watch the Hawks whenever I can because they represent what the Leafs should be doing, that is rebuilding with some great young talent, not torturing us with multi-million dollar long-term no trade contracts.

It is time for them to hire a permanent general manger a coaching staff and let Sundin win a cup, he will have to be traded to do this. The leafs have acted as a farm team for the rest of the league and this is because they don't have anyone with hockey sense as they try and trade for a cup run each year and seem tobe satisfied with running for the cup and not winning it. I spent a lot of money to go to several leaf games from Nothern Ontario and as disappointed each time. I live in Matheson and now go to watch real hockey at a local arena that has a junioe team

I haven't watched a Maple Leafs game for the past 10 games. Getting tired of all the nonsense.

They need to trade about 5 of their veterans, Sundin and Kaberle included.

Sundin and Kaberle would fetch a good return of young players and draft choices.

They need to cut out about $20m from their salary and get some young guys, then sign 3 free agents next year.

Cliff Fletcher's only been on the job a week, so I don't expect this to happen until close to the trade deadline near the end of February.

Also need to bring over Kulemin from Russia next year and give Stralman a more prominent role on defence next year.

When Fletcher asked yesterday "Who's J P Barry/"I don't think it was a joke -I think he couldn't remember who he was because he's too old for this job and not the Fletcher of old with the incisive sharp hockey mind. This was evident at the press conference to introduce him- at times he looked like a frightened deer in the headlights!! Let's see if he's up to it!
SUSAN SMITH, 2008-01-30 15:15:33

The writer says it all with "Is it time to blow up the Maple Leafs lineup, and make a run next season?" The fact that anyone believes you can blow a team up, simply to make a run next year is dreaming. It is this type of short-sighted thinking that has put the Leafs in their current situation.
