What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Well Jimmy, then what do we define as a playoff team? 8 teams in each conference can make the playoffs, and that usually includes 3 bonafide contenders, a few pretender teams and then outright mediocre squads to fill the rest of the spots. The talent level between the top and 8th seed is a big drop off --- so I will not pretend to think the Leafs can be compared against the better teams this year. But I do think they are a lock for the playoffs, because if I look around the conference there are at least 5 teams that are worse, even if they only have 8 wins in 21 games.

p.s. I have to begrudgingly tip my hat to Philly --- what an improved roster, in only one year.

Look at the wins and losses and then goals for and against then compare them to one of the better teams in the league. They only have 8 wins in 21 games. thats not playoff team stats.

I am not a Sens fan. I am a Flyers fan since the day the Leafs traded Darryl Sittler to them and have been a die hard fan ever since. I do enjoy watching the Sens play because they are fast and skilled 2 things the Leafs lack.

Okay, let's test Jimmy's theory and compare what the Leafs record would have been 10 years ago (before the shootout, OT Loss= 1point, etc.)

The Leafs have a record of 8 wins, 8 losses, 5 OT losses (21 points). Of those 5 OT losses, two of them went to a shootout.

Go back to the days when there was no shootout, and 1 point was awarded as a tie. Those two games would have ended in a tie (1 point each). So the Leafs record would have been 8-11-2 (18 points) under the old system.

Now, since Jimmy seems to be a Sens fan in disguise, let us break down his team's record in the same way. Current record: 15-3-0 (30 points)

One shootout win, no SO losses

Record under old system: 14-3-1 (29 points)

Call a spade a spade, Jimmy. Your point on Toronto's record is well taken (even though the numbers are not as bad as you insinuate). But the Sens' record also gets overstated with the shootout wins they accumulate, wins that used to be ties (and Ottawa is a team that was tailor made for the shootout).

Jake

With the Leafs having 21 points in 21 games is very misleading. Look at the 8 wins in 21 games as the real indicator of what kind of team they really are. What are you been drinking to think they are a 500 team ?

When a team has more losses than wins its not a good thing. They also give up more goals than they score another negative for your cup contending team.

Jimmy:

I'm getting fooled by the new point system? Check you previous post 2007-11-18 00:45:24. The Leafs have 21 points in 21 games currently, with 61 games remaining. What combination of wins, losses and overtime losses are you projecting for them to get to 30 points by the end of the season(e.g. 3 wins and 3 overtime losses, 4 wins and 1 overtime loss, etc.)? You're projecting regulation losses in the mid-50 range for the remaining 61 games? What have you been smoking?

My 2007-11-17 post was a joke - I don't recall claiming that the Leafs are definitely a play-off team, although I believe they have the pieces in place to get in at the 7 or 8 spot if everything goes right.

Good one LOL.

The Make Me Laffs have 8 wins now in 21 games. You are getting fooled by the new point system. After last night 8 wins in 21 games is bad. Thats under 500. Last 21 games against Ottawa Make Me Laffs have now won 3. Ottawa was flat last night, it happens over a long season. To think Toronto is a playoff team is funny. If they make it it will be because Buffalo and Atlanta are worse. They will only make it as the 8th place seed if they make it. Then get swept in the first round. Hopefully they play Ottawa in the first round if they make it.

I was at the game and the Senators played well, as they usually do. The Leafs were simply a better team than they were last night. Most noteably, the Leafs received help from their forwards defensively. I have to admit that I thought Andropov should have been run out of town years ago, but I was clearly wrong. He is a force out there.

Jimmy

You better check your math regarding your comment "they are on pace to finish the year with 30 points". Handing the best team in the league their first shut out loss of the season is at least a sign that the Leafs can play at a higher level than people give them credit for, when they're healthy. They do have to play with play-off level intensity every game however, and we don't always see that.

GO LEAFS!!!!!
