What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

As long as Leafs fans are willing to cough up money for a mediocre line-up, then Leafs management will continue to offer mediocrity. It seems to pay well in T.O.

Heads should roll namely Ferguson, but who in their right mind would want the job of Leafs GM? As long as Peddie and Tannenbaum are running the show, the Leafs will be a circus. We are talking about one of, if not the worst organizations in all of sport.

Arrgh, inconsistent team. Why did they not play Raycroft last night as that was the trade for goalies, Toskala let a week shot in for the winning goal. Even our goalies are inconsistent.

Last saturday a guy at the GM shop saw my Leaf Jersey and pointed to my stomach and said 'You will not be able to wear that tommorow 8-0 Sens' so I said 'Keep the faith' and I never give up, but darn I am getting close to it. Lets try and finnish last for a few years and get super talented draft picks and keep them, look at the hawks now- good young players coming up.

Oh well, maybe Leafs can win on friday and Saturday - right ha ha!

I will still watch the games but I am more pessimistc nowadays. Me thinks this spring will be another 'GOLF LEAFS GOLF' which is very sad!

let's see some blood & guts

let ferguson be the first, then maurice will follow, the players will not play for him but only when the spirit moves them, they need to be motivated, by trades, demotins, or waivers.

let mccabe be the first player to feel it!!!!

then trade all players overt 30!let's aim for the bottom rather than be a mediocer team that fails nearly every game.

Who would want this job if they fired JFJ anyway?

Here is the job description.

Team with many glaring problems...where to start?

Salary cap problem....long term deals with suspect players.

Aging one way star player.

No young stars on the way....name one blue chip prospect in Leaf land!!

Draft picks traded for aging stars year after year...last year didn't even have a pick in first two rounds of the draft.

Non relenting media and fan scroutany.

Who would want this job!!

WIll heads roll? Following true leaf fashion NO. We'll continue how great a team we really are, we just haven't found ourselves. Keep waiting leaf fans, 40 more years of the same BS

Jimmy: In theory that would be a great idea. But they can't draft players to save their lives anyway, so what's the use? The only two decent prospects they drafted are Pogge and Rask, and look what Rask did for Boston! This is the frustration for Leaf nation.

Sean: they were in the conference Final in 2002, the same year they spanked the Sens out of the playoffs

The agony that some elements of Leaf Nation put themselves through as the season rolls along is nothing short of amazing. One win over the top team in the league and suddenly they're beating the playoff drums.

Others among that group, however, realize that, collectively, the team is basically slightly above a .500 performer and has been for the past several seasons, and with no immediate prospects of getting any better. They will again finish with around 90 points and that will fall just short of the required 95-96 pts to make the playoffs. Again. That's simple reality and all the optimism and wishful-thinking in the world will not change things one iota.

Yes, they beat Ottawa 3-0 but it was more a case of Ottawa coming out flat (as they did at home when losing 4-1 to Washington a few weeks ago - and look where Washington is) than any sudden melding together of a Leaf "system" - and that's what those fans must keep in mind or else risk having a nervous breakdown before the season ends.

Phoenix, dead last in the Western Conference, also has 8 wins, and three of those came against Anaheim (1-0 and 6-5) and Dallas (5-0). I doubt that many fans out there thought for even a second that that meant a playoff spot for the Coyotes. They no doubt enjoyed those wins, but probably have managed to keep things in perspective. Something the more emotional among the so-called Leaf Nation have not managed to do.

Dude, all they've gotta do is get Pat Quinn back. He was awesome and would solve lots of problems. He was GM and coach so why can't he do it again?
