What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Why not!!..I'm sure there're plenty of other empty heads in the great hockey world of Toronto. This should give upper management another excuse, as to why the leafs continue to suck, while"the new staff gets the hang of things".Let's hope the comedy channel gets tired of the competition, and buys the team.Larry the cable guy would fit right in, this zoo.

Clean out the Coaching Entourage behind the bench, bring back Pat Burns, give him singular control of the players. He will let the players play the game they know how to play, and as far as JFjr let him go, "Dougie for GM" sounds pretty good to me.

being a leaf fan for years i can honestly say enough is enough. what a bunch of incompetent people running this team. get rid of them all. atleast i could watch or read about a team that is rebuiding rather than a tem that is so pathetic. i think maurice is doing a fairly good job. jfj just cant bring in people. he is brutal.

I think the biggest errors that have come from this team are from the coach, and therefore Paul Maurice must go.

He has made some major errors this year,

1) starting Raycroft on opening night (huge huge mistake)

2) Not adapting the systems to the teams strenghts and weaknesses. (The leafs were never that defensive under Quinn but had a much better puck moving system, because they had a better goalie Cujo and 1st year Belfour)

3)Continuing to go with struggling players (both Kronwall and Strahlman are much better than Wisnewski, similarly Tuckers horrible d-coverage should be reprimended)

The strong forecheck system that has been implemented failed because this team is not built for speed nor has the goaltending to deal with it.

However, if a simple defensive system was adapted where the forwards collapse on the puck (rather than stay high on the points)

Lastly, although JFJ has made too many errors and needs/will be gone by next year the talent on the leafs is there and not nearly as bad as it is portayed (especially with the vast improved play of Antropov, not just his points). Most teams, would kill to have the talented depth at D the leafs have, yet it is the biggest problem on this team.

Remove Maurice and bring in a proven coach, a collapsing defensive sytem that transition to quick puck movement out of the zone, and this team will make the playoffs.

I have been a Leafs fan for over 40 years and watched them in their glory days of the late 60's as a young kid, and am thoroughly disgusted with them now. JFJ has runied that team with the long term, over priced contracts he put in place - McCabe, Kubina, Gill are not the answer. Hell, we even need to let Sundin go, as I said last year. Give him a chance to do something elsewhere, he was great in his day but he;s not the answer anymore! For the money we are paying him, let's really sign some young 3 - 4 year NHL pros (although good general mgr's & teams don't let the good ones get away) and bulid through the draft, as JFJ said he would. We have the nucleus of some good young players, Kaberle, Coliacovo when he's back, Stralman et al on D - Steen, Wellwood, and yes, Ponichorovsky and Antropov etc. but lets put them with some other young guys that are hungry and will grow together for the next 3 - 4 years. Has goaltending been good - no, not consistent but, with the d that they've been playing as well, is it the number 1 problem, no.

Look at Chicago this year - give the 1st rounders (too bad JFJ traded them all away) a chance to play and maybe in 3 - 5 years, we'll be ok but I can't take watching anymore of the horse_ _ _ _ we've become accustomed to.

Sigh. Do some of you even bother reading other posts? Jay, what, exactly, could "Dougie" do that JFJ can't do AT THE PRESENT TIME? "Dougie" has no more qualifications to be a GM than JFJ did when he was hired and can do nothing to change the team's immediate fortunes than the guy who created the mess in the first place!

And Toady, I understand your frustration with the McCabe situation - but even an offer for a "bag of pucks" means the receiving team must also take on the rest of his contract (assuming he waives his no-trade clause). Why would any other GM do that?

A Sundin trade - and a Kaberle one - would bring the best in terms of draft picks and/or prospects - but be prepared to drop like a rock to below the Washington line for this year - and probably the next two years as well - before seeing any appreciative improvement on the ice. By then everyone will be screaming for JFJ's replacement's scalp.

Choppity-chop-chop-chop!

Let us see JFJ's head drop!

But seriously - perhaps the most valuable franchise should sack their entire front office, an re-build one that is actually skilled and competent. The days of outspending other teams are long gone thanks to the cap! These days, you need skill, vision, and good luck to role your way.

It was one thing to play poorly during the Ballard era, when spending was thrifty - it is another thing to lose when you are paying out the max!

Teachers - bring back the pride and glory!

If by chance JFjr. is gone by no later then this week, OMG why have the Leafs ignored Jacques Demers
paullie, 2007-11-26 15:53:25

Hate to say it, but we are stuck in this situation, regardless of who is managing this team. With the one way/no movement contracts JFJ has handed out like candy, we'll have to wait for them to pretty much expire before consequential changes can be made. (thats' the cap for you!) And as far as hiring a gm based on "name" value, what in the world are they thinking? I doubt the Pope, with all his "name" recognition could clean up this mess any sooner. Really, do you see a team willing to take up McCabes' salary, not to defend, or paying Raycroft the money he's making to shrug his shoulders after each puck finds the back of the net? Didn't think so. At this point, all we can do is sit through a couple more "next Years", and hope that the corporate crowd realizes that taking clients to a Leafs game doesn't sell as much product as it once did, and stop filling those seats. I wont hold my breath, but maybe that'll send a message to whomever is actually in charge of the ownership of MLSEL.

Okay time to retool the team. Please trade away Sundin to a good team so the poor guy has a chance to get a Cup ring to put next to his Olympic/World medals. He should be worth a good young prospect to a team that thinks they are close to the top and need one last ingredient. Next,

trade McCabe for a bag of pucks or whatever they can get for him, keep Kaberle and Antripov, Tulsti and a few others like Steen and Stajan. Goalies are so-so but they may be good with a real defense in front of them instead of the terrible 5. I like Maurice but not sure if the team will respond to him so let him go along with JFJ. Would it be possible to get someone who knows hockey to be the GM with some guts and not Peddies lap dog? The fans will always be in the seats because 90% are seasons tickets mostly right offs for companies that give them away so forget the AC centre being empty for games, who says no to a free ticket to a hockey game(at least in Canada?). We probably deserve another team in southern ontario due to the fan base here but idiot Bettman will never let that happen.
