2012 GAMES

What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

I think I'd even take Pierre McGuire as GM right now...ok, well it's a stretch. That being said, Ferguson has made a bigger mess of this team than what it was when he inherited it. Look how Philly turned their team around. Sure, they bought some players, but not the likes of a McCabe. There are other defensemen that could play for the leafs, make 1/4 qurater of his salary, and be the same liability he is. Not to mention Tucker and his antics are old.

Something has gotta be done and done fast.

Monitoring the situation is not good enough.

Mr. Ferguson - What are you doing to win games?

Yah, mistakes have been made. You can’t change that.

Tell what you can do - and do it.

Prove to us that you and Maurice are the men for the job. Just do it. If you can’t, then walk away.

My 6-year old watches every game -- (I record the late ones).

He's pretty disillusioned – but still wears his leafs jersey to bed and school.

Give him some wins. Come on. Give him a Stanley Cup.

Play like a team that cares.

I've been watching this team for almost 40 years and even though we Leaf fans have suffered through some pretty lean years (Ballard era) I can't recall a time when so many fans, myself included, have just lost interest and couldn't care less about this team. Can't recall a time where many have been so completely turned off by the whole organization.

I no longer look forward to watching this team play and have I have just stopped watching the games. Why bother? It's just not fun. I just don't need the aggravation and I find all the petty excuses quite tiresome. I suspect that I'm probably not the only one to drop games from my viewing schedule.

I wonder if MLSE can hear the fans leaving?

na, na ,na ,na...

na, na ,na ,na...

hey hey hey...goodbye!!!

I think that I'll throw myself in front of a bus if I hear Tucker say one more time " we have to put our noses to the grindstone".

Try putting the puck in the net ya little puke....that's why you are getting $ 3.5 million ain't it?

Get rid of them all except Wellwood....he is the only hockey player in the bunch.

PS did you see that big jerk Hal Gill roughing up Jason Blake during practice yesterday? Ya useless tool ...why not try that aggression against the Habs tonight and you will lose some chicklets.

ahhh ain't it fun to talk trash about the Buds

Hey anybody else noticed that John Ferguson Jr's dad played for the Habs...Ken Dryden played for the Habs...Pat Burns coached the Habs...Shane Corson played for the Habs...Pete Mahovolich, Frank Mahovolich...Jacques Plante...a conspiracy I tell you!!!! The Habs have been planting spies in the Leafs organisation ever since '67 to make sure the Habs win the most cups!!!!

Why should heads roll??? Did you listen to the sounds bites from training camp? This team (when they ar all healthy) will make the playoffs and challenge for the cup! I keep hearing that all the players need to be healthy...and when all the players are in the lineup...and all the rest of the lines fed to the media by the management of this sad-sack team to appease the Leafs Nation.

Give me a break fur cryin out loud!

What exactly would firing JFJr or PM accomplish at this stage of the game? They are spin doctors at best with no talent for getting anything out of a player(heart). They couldn't recognise the need for a change and we are therefore stuck with a bunch of slugs for too long a time.

All Leaf player's contract should be TEAM performance based with no such thing as a "no-movement" clause. AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH! I am just so sick of having my loyalties jerked around by those whose quest is for the all-mighty buck and not the Cup!

Let us look at where the "buck stops"...that is the true problem for the Leafs in the past, present & matter what transpires with JFJ & Maurice. The ownership of the hockey club is nothing but dysfunctional and incompetent. You have people and investors who own the club who have no knowledge of the game of hockey and are only involved for one thing and one thing make money off of the gold mine known as MLSE and they continue to do so. For a team that has shown nothing but pure ineptitude since 1967...never to have returned to the Cup Final...they make more money than any other NHL team year in and year out. The "sheep" have continued to flock to the turnstiles and keep the building full to the rafters through all of the comedy that has been imposed as an actual game of hockey. Until there is ONE PRIVATE owner to run the hockey club...and not the buffoons like Peddie & Tanabaum and the Ontario Teachers Society (give me a break!) then nothing but nothing is going to change no matter who is the GM and Head Coach!

wow --- this thread never goes away, does it? I think I posted on here a couple weeks ago and it is still going.

Just one observation about Maurice: whether it is his doing or the players' fault, the Leafs have a glaring lack of a transition game. Take the Phoenix game for instance. They couldn't get the puck from their own end to the opposing blue line without constantly chipping the puck off the boards or golfing it into the other end, unable to string together two consecutive passes against a below-average team. It was not this bad even last year. With the new rules, a lack of a transition game is a sure recipe for many losses, and the coach must be held partially accountable for that. That transition starts from the blue line --- Kubina, Kaberle, McCabe and Gill all were half decent passers when they played for other coaches (or other teams).

Peddie says this morning, "We're monitoring the situation." Are you kidding me!? Monitoring it? That's what you do when you're playing .500 hockey. When you're dead last in the NHL in wins, you DO SOMETHING! Let's hope MLSE is about to DO SOMETHING - send Peddie packing! Sheesh....
Michael, 2007-11-27 08:17:34

If the Leafs are to salvage this season, they MUST fire Ferguson first, have one person run the Hockey Empire, just like the Raptors have done.

Who should the Leafs hire as the next General Manager Jacques Demers would be nice fit, @ least the management team won't have to eat humble pie should they bring back Pat Burns or Pat Quinn.
