What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

way to go Tucks! What a sparkplug! correction....what a plug!

want to give your team a lift? why not take 30 punches to the head from some skirt from finland?

George...is D'arcy (i'm a goal scorer now) Tucker worth 3 million? nah...he's priceless.

A freaking legend ...in his own mind....the little puke

p.s. getting a little sick of hearing Sundin say: " if we are going to be a playoff team....yada yada yada". Hey kojak, if you want to play a shift in the playoffs, maybe ya should think about asking for a trade.

Nice shot of Tucker fighting Ruutu. If you can't lick 'em in the alley, as that old bigot Conn Smythe liked to say, then simply gouge their eye out. What an over-rated pansy.

When your rival has such low standards, it makes it difficult. At least the Habs make an effort each year.

Good example? Who would you rather have running your show? Bob Gainey or John Ferguson jr ?

Indeed, Pat Quinn was more bluster than brains. He had the gall to drag McCabe along to the Olympics. One reporter described McCabe's performance at the Olympics as " pathetic".

We could write a book.

I've commented on the Alfie thing before, essentially asking if those who do boo him every time he touches the puck not realize that this only serves to motivate him? Just check his stats against the Leafs - especially in their rink! That, to me, graphically illustrates just how dense the painted blue-and-white faces really are. You never, and I emphasize NEVER, give the opposition added incentive to shove the boos down your throats. But they just don't seem to get it.

As far as that Domi thing is concerned, that was just disgusting and a total embarrassment for the team and the city. If and when they decide to retire numbers in Leafland, his will likely be among the first.

Tucker is a classic example of over-estimating a player's overall ability while paying through the nose for "passion." They wouldn't know passion if it jumped up and bit them on the root.

Yesiree. Same mentality that boos Alfie. One of the truly great players of this era.

1)Because he mocked Sundin who had childishly thrown his broken stick into the crowd endangering one & all.

2) Because Alfie cleanly hammered Tucker (the original cheapshot clown) and scored on the ensuing play. No penalty was called. Of course, Tucker as his custom, acted like he had just been shot.

Same crowd that honoured Tie Domi. Can you dig that? Domi couldn't skate, shoot or stick-handle. (what's left?) But on his retirement, let's give him a send-off as if he was Howie Morenz.

With this mentality, is it any wonder Leaf nation has known no joy in 40+ years?

And that's why we luv em

OK - apology accepted. Truth be told, I enjoyed your analysis - and I try to approach things with the same pragmatism. Guys like Bob Ashdown, for reasons known only to themselves, seem to feel that posts submitted without the "Habs rule" ... "Sens suck" - "GO LEAFS GO" crapola are not worthy of consideration, and that only confirmed Leaf fans should respond to posts such as this.

On Antropov he jumped all over me and called it "stupid" when I said the question as to whether he is worth what they're paying him will be open to conjecture until he starts doing it on a consistent basis. Ironically, that was before he went into his current 8 or 9 game funk.

Bottom line: the Leafs are a mediocre team and in that they share with about seven or eight others (Washington, Tampa, Florida, LA, Phoenix, Atlanta, Edmonton, and Nashvile (that last is a crime the way they dismantled that team).

Right now, in their conference, they sit 13 out of 15 and although they are currently not that many points out of a playoff spot, they have to climb over 5 teams to get there. Not all of them will be losing at the same time so that makes the climb all that much more difficult. They'd need to go on an 8 to 10 game winning binge to do it. I just don't see it happening.
George O'Leary, 2007-12-31 12:56:57

Goob, what's all this? I suppose that you going to give Bob Cole a pass too, just because he is old.

When I played junior, every team had one guy who was just plain nuts, two guys who were complete goons, and the rest used their sticks like weapons.

I would love to see most so- called analysts & experts take just one shift....without pooping themselves.

This includes most of these play-by-play & colour commentators.

Gustav, 2007-12-31 12:04:00

Sorry George. You are right. No need for the insults. If I mix alcohol with my meds....can go off the rails sometimes. Truth be told, I'm 60.....going on 12.

Back to the topic, whatever that might be.....Antropov? He's a stiff.

the Leafs are in a free-fall (annual event). I am not certain if the leafs have more than one bona fide NHLer.
Goober, 2007-12-30 12:28:10

Insults like that show your general disdain for all seniors, which in turn lessens the effect of everything else you say Peanut (sorry .... you prefer the synonym "Goober."

At one time, reading your posts, I regarded you as something of a wit. Now I realize I was only half-right.
George O'Leary, 2007-12-30 11:35:53

I didnt think Antropov would keep his scoring up. I believe its 8 games now with a point.

Pretty sad when plays on the first line with the so called great leaf mats sundin and goes so long without a point.

Cut the loss with Antropov and Poni this summer, 2 wastes of a roster spots not to mention there seven figure salaries.
