What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

JFJ has to go. He was given an opportunity to build the team, he failed.. miserably.

There are some good, young, up-and-coming players on the Leafs roster and with the Marlies. However, there are some Leafs that have to go.. now would be better, but, off-season is a must.

Blake, Tucker, McCabe, Kubina aren't doing what they're paid to do... and.. they're overpaid.

I don't see Sundin agreeing to be traded and wanting to be traded however, give him an option. Give up the "C" and become an "A" instead. Let's get somebody on the Leaf team who can lead. Sundin is a good player, but, he's not a Captin.

As much as I'm a Leaf fan and have been for near 40 years, I don't want the Leafs to make the playoffs. Why? It's not about making the playoffs. It's about the Stanley Cup. Just making the playoffs isn't good enough anymore. The goal should be, and is, the 'Cup.' Period. So, let's see the Leafs stay near or at the bottom of the standings until the season's end. Tear them down. Then, build them up again with the youth and some fresh produce for next season. New GM. Maybe a new coach but, I can see Paul getting an opportunity to bring the team up if his hands are untied and with the help of a sensible and effective GM. Bring in a new captain. Bring in a new goalie or stay with Toskala and bring in a decent back-up goalie and get rid of Raycroft (that's a must).

Maybe next year we'll hear chants of "Go Leafs Go" instead of "Blow Leafs Blow!"

Many of the above comments re-assigments of players and GM have merit.[Definately]But the fact remains that top management and ownership is in total disarry boardlining on the ridiculous.Ownership is a fat cat with no interest in Hockey, this is why Scott Bowman and others wanted no part of this charade. The pain for leaf fans will continue sad to say.

Blake regretting decision to come to Toronto? He should be thanking Ferguson for overpaying a 20-goal scorer who had one good year... The signing of Blake is just another example of why JFJ should go.

They are in a hole that and need to make some hard choices over the next 4-5 years to get a competitive team.

Paying a mediocre 4th liner 3 million for 4 years sums it up perfectly. Stop giving draft picks away for nothing, signing high-priced 'talent' than is untalented to long term contracts and start developing talent.

JFJ seems to infect everything that he touches and needs to go soon.

Add 5 years to whenever JFJ is set to leave and the Leafs have a chance to be a real team again.

On the Downie sucker-punch. A lot of Leafers are eating crow over condemning McGratton for the statements he made. Yes, Downie will get what is coming to him sooner than later.

send jfj TO EDMONTON Kevin Lowe has worn out his welcome we need new blood, JFJ is a modern GM, its time to get rid of Hemsky, and start fresh

I don't think it's necessary to blow up the Leafs roster in order to make it better. Take a look at Montreal. Bob Gainey actually moved some pretty high-priced talent out and replaced them with youngsters and a couple of FA signings. Roman Hamrlik has been the anchor on the Montreal defence corps this season. Imagine what he would have done for the Toronto blueline instead of, say, Bryan McCabe. But if the Leafs are serious about cleaning things up, then JFJ has to go. There is no younger generation of players waiting for their turn at the show in the TO organization. There is no wiggle room in the team's salary cap. It's used up on players like McCabe, Tucker, Blake, Kaberele and Kubina. Sundin commands a fair chuck, granted, but that can be remedied if the Buds are serious about their future. Everyone uses Philadelphia as a benchmark but there are other teams as well. Anaheim, Chicago and Montreal are only three other teams that have a clear vision for the future. The Leafs are marking time, tredding water, what have you. Removing JFJ would be a start, but whoever replaces him would also have to get used to the Leafs' way of doing business. And that has to change too.

First of all, Sundin won't go. Big fish, small pond. Secondly, the only 2 commodities that any other team would take are Kaberle and Toskala. It's gonna be a long time before the Leafs see any respectabilty.
Fowel Mude, 2008-01-08 14:48:00

Keep Kaberle, Stajan. Steen, White, Wellwood, Toskala. The rest?...see ya!
F. Kinright, 2008-01-08 14:43:25

going to the maple leafs was the dunbest thing Jason Blake ever made and he must regret it, i know i would. Perhapes if JFJ got kicked out of his spot and they hired a new GM, maybe the can trade Sundin at the deadline and not trade there first round pick, take a good prospect in June and then get some players out of the free agentcy, but if they dont dump JFJ than nobody would want to play for the leafs, because with JFJ, the little moves dont matter, only the big ones, if you look at some of the top GMs, like Bob Gainy, Brian Murry, Ray Shero, Kenin Lowe, Doug Wilson, Dale Talon. They all make the small moves and sigh the small free agents.
RJ, 2008-01-08 12:06:22

Yep there are a few assets on the Leafs. But they should keep Kaberle and a few others.

Such as Steen,Stajan,White,Devereau, Kilger,Wellwood.

Unfortunately, the stiffs that they should dump ...Tucker,McCabe are so overpaid that nobody would ever take them.

Where's Milbury when you need him.
