What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Whazzat? Blow up the Maple Leafs? Everyone can see that they already blew up on the ice. They get blown up every game that they play.

But they are solo close to making the playoffs. That is the BIGGEST reason to blow them up, isn't it?

No Please don't do anything to change this team! I live for the chance I get to watch them lose, the way I watch other teams win. It's part of the fabric of hockey! What else can we in Ottawa laugh about?

The Leafs are not that far back. Once they get toskala goin' they'll be back in contention. Plus, Tucker is going to have a huge second half.

Maybe the leaf fans should stop endorsing the team. If the leafs start loosing money then the fat cats up top will accually want to change the team around. Right now they don't care the cheques are still comin in. Even if they do get the first pick and that pick turns out to be a good player, the team will still suck as long as its beiing managed the way that it is. Untill the management are forced to change the way they run the business have fun at the bottom!

Yes, yes, by god yes, the Leafs should be blown up! This team cannot improve long-term by deluding themselves into thinking they are a playoff team, then coming up just short and getting only a mid-range first rounder who may or may not help the team. Besides, isn't the goal to win the Stanley Cup and not just to make the playoffs? And everyone knows this team will NEVER win the Stanley Cup as currently constructed. Get rid of JFJ, trade Sundin, and whoever else you can get rid of (except for a couple veteran pieces for some stability) and clear salary cap room and get yourself into position to draft young stud players like Stamkos or Tavares. That is the Leafs only hope of winning a Cup sometime in most of the fans' lifetime. Please, for the love of god, Leaf management, do the right thing!!!

The phrase " blow up " seems a little harsh. I prefer the more gentle " flush this steaming pile".

Steve Simmons is right on.

Maurice is not an NHL coach and Ferguson couldn't run a Dairy Queen. (credit Mark Cuban)

McCabe must go too. He is not worth 5 million or whatever it is the dufus is getting. He has cost the Leafs probably 10 points this year.

He is a liability. Big time.

I imagine that they will clean house, but as usual they will replace them with more knuckleheads....eg. gilmour, domi etc
Goober, 2008-01-08 18:33:16

Don't blame JFJ for a pathetic leafs system that has been in place for years, the scouting is shameful the draft choices are pathetic, your living back in the time of the original 6 stil its not JFJ's faul people in Toronto accept mediocrity and than gripe about it look at the Raptors, look at the Argos, all mediocre teams.....

On a positive note...the game against Philly was excellent the other night and the Leafs should have won...the Leafs can play well and are only a few points out of the playoffs. While I do not watch much hockey nowadays, the overall quality is much improved...much faster and open ice. Lets give some support to the Leafs...remember there are 30 odd teams in the league all trying to achieve the same goal...

Trade Sundin now while you can get something for him. He has been the heart and sole of this team but can help us in the future by agreeing to a trade. This would allow us to get a high draft pick(s) in return
Jason, 2008-01-08 17:54:36

Scrap this wreck. The team has been a disaster for years. Get draft picks and young players for whomever you can and rebuild. With players like Stamkos and Tavares available in the next 2 years, things could look good down the road. Don't tell me that the fans won't accept rebuilding. They've been watching a loser since the heyday of Sittler and Mcdonald. And for godsakes hire a GM with a track record and total autonomy!!!
