What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

They should start getting ready for the biggest parade and party that Toronto has ever seen! Easy wins over Ottawa, Montreal and Detroit within a week has shown clearly who the best team is. And that was with many regulars missing with injuries and a bunch of juniors filling in. Just imagine what a healthy Leafs team will do come playoff time. With Vesa in goal, nothing can stop them!

They should force players with no trade contract to play ball with trades. They need to start now. I am choosing players to move, not necessarily because I don't like them as players, but because they need to make room for younger players for the rebuilding process. They need to trade Darcy Tucker,Jason Blake, Pavel Kubina, Brian McCabe,Matt Stajan I like Matt, but he'll never be more than a 3rd or 4th liner, and we likely have those in the system. And Sundin, but only if he agrees. He's earned that.

I agree with Gordholio but to take it one step further forget about thet ticket sales just think what a leafs stanley cup win would make for the owners in merchandising alone that would make ticket sales a drop in the bucket !!!

do nothing back up the truck they beat the habs last night.. 6 pts out of a playoff spot..26 games left keep the faith all you leaf fans out there.. hehehe

Stay as they are, the leaf nation (or neighbourhood) whould not know what to do with a winner. Sundin is a big fish in a small pond who has the odd good game (god knows they pay him enough) but is a real choke in the streach. Bob Cole knows all the names so lets not confuse him with new players.

I think the leafs should fold up and move to Winnipeg where the fans will love them.

Gordholio: it makes sense to the rest of us, but not to Leaf ownership.

A Cup winner takes a few years of rebuilding, and a pension fund is not interested in owning a rebuilding franchise for two or three years. They need to keep the corporate seatholders happy, so they need to create the illusion that they are trying to make the playoffs each year, and that means trading away draft picks and overpaying free agents. Start a rebuilding process, and the suits pull out for that year or two of rebuilding!

No, the ownership would not condone such a thing --- they are only interested in short term financial gain. This is why the real Leaf fans who pay for the rest of the seats must stay away when they are losing --- the owners need to be hit in the pocketbook

Some people seem to think that the Maple Leafs ownership is content the way it is.

People are filling the stands and watching on TV as much as they ever have.

Think about this:

If the Maple Leafs went to the Final, they would make a lot more money in ticket revenue - millions.

Don't you think they would want to make more money?
gordholio, 2008-02-08 02:31:06

The Leafs don't need to do anything. They are making money and most of their fans are easily amused. Give them a 2 game winning streak and they're out planning the parade. Like whatsisname says on the TV commercial, they are either incredibly loyal or incredibly stupid.
Buddy from Cape Breton, 2008-02-07 08:44:09

C'mon, people... for the past 40 years, the Gardens and the ACC has sold out every game. MLSE is interested in one thing and one thing ONLY... And that is to make moooonnnnneeeeeyyyyyy! MLSE doesn't care about winning the Cup. They don't care about you or I. All they care about is making money. And as bad as the Leafs record is, buisness is BOOMING for MLSE.

The NHL is 'FIXED' anyhow... Nuf Said!!!
