What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

I don't think the Leafs have a choice but to blow it up. Larry Tanenbaum seem's to know what he is doing, but with Peddie having the final say nothing is getting done, and he hired Ferguson, who seems to think there record stands for itself, but last time I checked a loss is still a loss, and their record is 16 wins 29 losses.

Ferguson wanted a youth movement, but still seems to trade our draft picks as quick as Raycroft finds the pine after starting a game! So unless the Two headed Harold Ballard that runs this team wants to stop running it into the ground they need to clear house. Or we can have Peddie save Ferguson and he can go out and acquire the new versions of Jonas Hoglund and Aki Berg to take some of the pressure off the other Leaf scape goats!

All I have to say is "kerplop"

I called this mess at the end of last season and stated it over and over again in the "should the Leafs get rid of Ferguson?' topic (see Ron 2007-11-25).

There have been excellent articles recently about the ineptitude of Preddie and the improbabilty of a meaningful solution. The one suggestion that did cause me to chuckle was to put JFJ (he who can't tell a good hockey player from a bad one) behind the bench. Now that game I would pay to watch. JF (if he wants $4M he has got to be worth $4M)J would be a scream as he tried to figure out what the game of hockey was all about.

Seriously there are 2 things really getting my gout at the moment:

1) this Laffs team is too talkative. They all say we didn't do this and we didn't do that. They know what they should be doing but can't do it. So just shut up and spend your time quietly counting your millions.

2) Why do people still attend the games? Make a statement, get up and walk out halfway through a period. Boycott a game. State your displeasure!

You won't find me arguing against what you said about the Oilers, Norbit. Their roster and collection of prospects, not to mention management and coaching, is a quantum leap ahead of the Leafs.

What I was alluding to (at the time) was the comparative records of the two teams after some 44 games which, on close inspection, were very similar. But you're absolutely right - the Oilers are headed up (that win over Calgary was huge) while the Leafs (despite what their main cheerleader Cherry says about "ye of little faith") are spiraling down the drain.

Ultimately, with better people making the decisions, that might well turn out to be to their benefit. The worst thing that could happen to Toronto is to make a bit of a push over the second half and either make it to 8th or just miss again - thereby giving them a draft at about # 17 or 18.

Blow it up and do what? If JFJ is still there what hope is there? Peddie is still there. The leafs have got a real crappy draft record also. That team is snake bit and will be for years to come,

I know it wont happen, I just said I wish it would. The Leafs are ruining hockey for me. I am just thankful TSN shows games usually Wednesday nights and its 2 good teams so I am not stuck having to watch the Make Me Laffs.

It worked out good that the Laffs were out west and we got to see the Sens / Red Wings game.

What I meant was back in the early 1980's the Leafs rushed Bob McGill, Freddie Boimstruck ( spelling ) along and they were clearly not ready for the NHL but since the team was so bad they didnt have to earn the roster spots they were given to them.

Also there was a top 5 junior ( name escapes me ) that had his agent send a letter to the Leafs warning them not to draft his player because he wouldnt report.

Just because a player is drafted lower, doesn't necessarily mean they can't be an excellent player.

Look at Tomas Kaberle - drafted in the 200's and one of the top defencemen in the league.

Also, Detroit has had lower drafts, but done well with these picks. They key is the scouting.

There are players that were drafted well ahead of guys like Tomas Kaberle, but have not had such an impact in the NHL.

I disagree with Goober Nation, the worst broadcaster in hockey is Peirre McGuire with TSN. If he is covering a game I change channel quick. I don't know how this moron stays on the air. Sorry, off topic too.

George OLeary:

The Oilers are better because they actually have prospects(Gagne, Cogliano, and hockey people in their organization. The Oilers are young and rebuilding, whereas the Leafs are old, overpaid and clearly destined for the cellar. Oh, and the Oilers have actually won a Cup in the era of color T.V. Five, actually.
