What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Leigh, your argument would hold water if the Leafs didn't spend to the cap limit. They are spending money (more than most teams in player salary) just making bad decisions. For every playoff game the leafs play at home is all profit, why wouldn't they want the leafs to succeed?

The problem is Peddie, his personal politicking to save his job is sabotaging the leafs because he wants to be the head of the most popular NHL franchise. He has no clue on what it takes to run a hockey team.

The argument that the board only cares about the bottom line is true, however they aren't stingy on the payroll. The leafs are at the cap limit, they're not at the cap minimum.

I think the focus should be on finding an excellent GM to replace Ferguson at the end of the year. Get an experienced, big-name GM and let him decide what should be done.

If the brain dead Leaf fans would stop buying tickets you can bet there would be a MAJOR shakeup.

41 years of whining and lining up to buy tickets... and you think Peddie is an idiot?

Keep up the good work Toronto, I LOVE IT!!

So the leafs aren't having the best season so far it's not the end of the world.

Next season ? Stop going to the arena and paying for this team now. Shut down the TV broadcast as well. Let the beer copanies supply us fans with free beer who have been watching the crap and paying $9 at a game for one. Saves us and PLEASE.

everyone seems to be focusing on the wrong thing. its no Ferguson's fault. You need to look higher than him. The Leafs owners will never invest in the talent to achive the stanley cup! Why you ask? Because they can make 10x the profit with a mediocre team, than will an expensive talented team. Why is that? because no matter how bad the team gets, their games sell out every time! So until the fans stop coming when the team doesnt perform (like pretty much any other city); or the owners stop liking money...nothing will change. Ferguson is being used a the scapegoat by the media and there's nothing he could do (except trade the float Sundin away - that could help).

Leaf fans shake your heads, you cant "blow up a team" overnight , think you are going to have a Stanley Cup parade! The problem starts with the "jock sniffers" upstairs in the boardroom, who think they are hockey gods, [ there's only one and he is running the Ducks]

JF will have to go, but in fairness to him he is not the only GM to make bonehead moves, ie: Kevin Lowe signing Penner to $4.5 million per, and the guy shows up 30 lbs overweight, cant keep up with his linemates and plays on the first line. But I dont think they are blowing up the team in Edmonton. It takes time , and its even more difficult when you have little to peddle to the market, because

20 other teams are in the

same position .It has happened a few times, but I dont think there is appetite now for teams to give up high draft picks to pick up rent a players , so dont expect the world for a Matts trade. [If I was him by the way,get me the heck out of the zoo , quick].Hire a real hockey person, who will make sure there is scouting, and coaching personel in place to go its not so much of blowing up the joint, because you wake up the next day after the explosion, to find out your still sitting on a pile of .... But the message is very clear.. SOMEBODY PLEASE DO SOMETHING, this team is not going to the play offs as it stands.

George O Leary:

I absolutely agree with you on the Leafs situation. If they plan to blow the team up(which good lord, they should) then the worst possible thing would be for them to barely squeak in and get stomped by a better team and lose a high draft pick. Peddie needs to keep his nose out of hockey, Ferguson needs to be fired, but I think they should keep Maurice. Condsidering his situation, he has done an incredible job, a consummate professional. As for the rest of it, Leafs fans, get ready to be patient: the big contracts of McCabe, Gill, Tucker etc. make trades laughable at best, a suitable GM won't be available until the off-season and the development of prospects requires significant patience, not knee-jerk call-ups that destroy young players confidence. Write this season off, send Pogge back down for god's sake and pray for all you're worth that Peddie doesn't get involved. With all the money MLSEL makes, rebuilding this team shouldn't be difficult, but it needs to be from the ground up: the executive staff, the scouting, the development and the GM in particular, all of these need a complete overhaul. Of course, that's what competent people would do, and the Leafs ownership has been anything but. Im an Oilers fan, but even I'm sickened at what MLSEL has done to such a storied hockey club. Show your displeasure Leaf nation, and boycott the games until they take action.

Finally, somebody who thinks Bob Cole is the worst announcer in history! What game are you watching Cole? Joe Bowen is got to be the best & Pierre McQuire is very knowledgeable. The Leafs? I've been a season subscriber for 30 years & I don't know what they can do. Fire the whole team & start from scratch, maybe.A #1 draft choice like Sidney Crosby comes along only once in 20 years & Pittsburgh knew exactly when to pull the plug on the team.

I agree with Ron. I also called it last spring when they failed to wake up and smell the coffee.

Matts is one of the greatest Leafs ever and believe me, I have seen a lot of them since the 1940's but even this highly skilled and talented player can't do it by himself. The key to any winning team is exactly that--"team" and sadly this is not a team. It is easy to blame the coach and upper management but the ultimate blame falls on those overpaid individulists who have forgotten the meaning of teamwork.

So, yes, it is time to blow up the Leafs. Let Matts Sundin go to a team where he might have a chance to wear that ring with the blessings of true Leaf fans.

Another shining star that is destined for greatness ( but not with this gang),is Kyle Wellwood. Do this kid a big favor and trade him to a team where he can display those nifty moves and set-ups to an appreciative crowd. When Kyle flashes that infectious smile while carrying the cup over his head, I only hope the Toronto press and Leaf brass are there to record it all.
