What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

It's time for all Leaf lovers to get a grip on reality. Shaking up management is not going to turn things around in Leaf land. The only thing that will make the Leafs a winning team is a change of ownership - an owner who wants to win.

Is it really all that hard for Leaf fans to understand? I mean, Leaf Nation fans mush be living in a dream world if they believe the Leafs are ever go to hoist a Cup with the current ownership.

Why the heck would ownership change anything? They have a 'winning' franchise win or lose. They keep selling out and merchandise will always go. Why would they fix something that isn't broken from a business perspective?

The leafs misfourtune is not a direct correlation to mr. Mccabe and Raycroft. Razer showed just how good he is on the weekend. 4 goals in one period. Spare me the BS. McCabe is good but not that good to make a difference. Raycroft's poor play speaks for itself. Get a clue.

I told you!!! I told all of you! At the time Mcabe was injured, the Leafs were arverage(winning, 8 9th or 10h place, etc.) Now how have they done without him???????? Huh? Is this team better off? Any of you who say yes, see the topic of this forum is back to firing managment again! Last place without Mcabe... I am loving every second of this. Blow up the leafs and the certain fans who cant apreciate real hockey talent (Raycroft will prove all of you rong too!)

What goes around comes around. I feel the pain of Leaf fans, the Flyers were there last year and all my Leaf-lover friends were laughing at me. Sucks, doesn't it. But as O'Leary stated, the Leafs won't be able to turn this around any time soon. How does that McDonald's slogan go... Oh yeah, I'm lovin' it!

I agree with you George which is why we need to remove Peddie. Unfortunately due to this current management structure and horrible decisions (ludicrous contract signings that handcuffs the team), we need to wipe the slate clean and look at a 5 year plan to get back to respectability. Unfortunately as long as Peddie is at the helm, the lunacy will persist and nothing will change no matter who takes over as GM and coach.

WOW. I've seen unrest before when it comes to fan frustration with their team, and in many sports. But never like this.

But whereas the consensus seems to be to "blow it up and start over" it's also clear that many have not yet fully grasped the implications of the cap.

Steve Simmons illustrated it best in his column when he said "The Leafs, for the record, are in desperate times. Not only are they 28th in a 30-team NHL, but they have $40 million in salary allocated already for next season, none of it going to Mats Sundin, Alex Steen, Kyle Wellwood or Matt Stajan."

That last sentence really jumps out at you. In other words, if they traded Sundin for whatever they can get, in order to bring him back next season they would have to add whatever salary he'd demand to those already committed to the likes of Raycroft, Kubina, McCabe, Tucker, and Gill AND, at the same time, find enough to re-sign Steen, Wellwood and Stajan!!

And while it's fine to talk (dream?) about trading Blake, Tucker, Gill, Raycroft, Kubina, and McCabe, with Mike Milbury no longer around name me ONE team that would be willing to take any one of them, let alone all six. These guys all have contracts with some considerable time left so, unlike Sundin who'll be a UFA, none would be playoff "rentals." Whoever took them (and many contending teams are already close to, if not at, the cap themselves, leaving little wiggle room) would be stuck with those salaries for the remainder of the contract.

New people running things is a necessity, but even if Moses took over he'd be looking at at least a 4-year re-building program.

Bring back Harold Ballard!!!

Obviously money has never been an issue with the Leafs. That being said, give Raycroft is walking papers. Break in Pogie under Vesa. Paying big contracts to the big defenceman who are to big to keep up should find there way back to the minors. The baby leafs seem to be hungrier. The shakeup might be to send down a few and bring up a few. What could it hurt at this point and time. The big guys need to play big, play tough.Yes...bring in Scotty...give him full control from the prez down. Wake up leaf nation...quit paying their salaries.

Oiler Fan in GTA. You pritty much got it bang on as far as I can see. However the bit about the oil is not true in full. They did blow up the team and it was when they were accually good. Right after they missed the cup by one game. Penner was a bonehead move though. Also was Suray (however its spelt).
