What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Screw the Toronto Maple Leafs. Why are they such a big deal? Me and my friends have practically given up on Hockey Night In Canada because they seem to think everyone in Canada wants to see the damn Leafs ALL THE TIME... but I literally don't know anyone who is happy about them being the only team ever featured.

The Maple Leafs and their annoying fans can all go straight to hell as far as most real hockey fans are concerned.

As much as I hate to admit it, I find myself having to agree with George ... no offense meant but he is a Habs fan!! His assessment of the Leafs current problems are right on target, as are his predictions for the future of this club. We are far beyond the application of a "bandaid" solution ... the patient is in dire need of a heart transplant.

His views on Paul Maurice are also bang on ... I have nothing but admiration for the way Paul has handled the controversy surrounding this team. He has exuded nothing but class and dignity when confronted with fan and media frenzy with regard to the team he has inherited. I can only imagine what he could accomplish if not left to twist in the wind with the sorry hand he has been dealt.

For the first time in over 40 years of being a Leaf fan I find myself despairing of this team ever getting better. I think we can finally dispel the myth that we are only one or two key players/years away from being a contender (we're not). The fans won't leave because you are rebuilding ... they will leave if you do nothing! I'd rather see a real effort to have a better team in five years than a continuation of the temporary fixes that have been going on for too long. Time to sh** or get off the pot.

Well you better blow up the Montreal canadians and the Edmonton Oilers because they have had bad teams for the last 15 years and will never be the teams they where in the 70's and 80's.

No one in this or any other thread has been more critical of the Leafs than me. But I confine my criticism to picking apart management decisions that have led to their current situation. I do not (and wish others would not) resort to the "Leafs suck" kind of messages that dot these discussions. That sort of submission ranks right up there in the useless category with teats on a bull. I would guess that, whenever these are posted, most readers (if not all) simply skim right over them. They say nothing and certainly contribute nothing, to the discussion.

As for the Leafs' conundrum, I find it hard to believe that they are seriously contemplating re-visiting the past - again - by pursuing Fletcher, the man they fired a decade ago for doing a poor job, and who was recently fired by Phoenix for much the same reason. It was one thing to build a team when you could throw money around like a drunken sailor, and quite another to do so now with the limitations of a salary cap. What they need is someone much younger and more in tune with today's game.

The worst part is, some tinkering between now and the trade deadline could well result in their making a run at 8th. But at what expense? And to do what? Get blown out in 4 in the first round? (and please don't drag up that "jinx" they allegedly hold over Ottawa which last manifested itself several years ago - that is as useless as "Leafs suck.")

Besides, any changes they make will have to be sufficient to reach 92 points, likely once again to be the cut-off point. To get there, they will need to play at a .694 pace for the 72 potential points left in this season. Their pace over the first 92 points already past has been .457. Does anything think this is possible, and that all 6 teams they need to pass to get there will cooperate by simultaneously going into the tank?

Get a younger GM in now, and not some interim dinosaur, and give that person full power to make changes designed to solidify the future - not just the rest of this season. Keep Maurice and let him work with whatever changes are made to that end.
George O'Leary, 2008-01-17 12:49:09

Please do not make any changes to the leafs and management. The rest of Canada like things just the way they are. It would only be better if you could simply remove Bob Coles from HNIC and put in a P/P who know the names of the players and tell the story like it realy is to the entire "Leaf Nation". Go loose another one Leafs it looks good on you.
Dave, 2008-01-16 14:29:21

no, why waste time. An expansion team starting 5 years from know would have a better chance of winning the cup. The leafs will be mediocre for next 50 years no matter what is done.
Slim J, 2008-01-16 14:15:52

Ahha! Darren, U are one of the fans who ignore the facts- leafs were winning games before he went down. 5 of 7 if i recall. He goes down an they win just 3 games in a month incl last night to date.

Im not saying he dont make mistakes, not saying they lose just becase he is injured --- I say leafs are worse without him. Leafs are a bad team with bad coach and bad ownership and the team makes Mcabe, raycroft, sundin and its players look bad (but plyers get blamed). Why do u think ex-leafs always play better when they leeve? Mcabe WILL leave and win --- garanteed! Whish i could say same about raycroft, but leafs have already ruined his career, worse they prevente marlies like gamache kronwall and stralman from getting enuff NHL play time (look at how well stralman play last nite, and he has what, 8 NHL games this year????????)
Mcabe and raycroft's biggest fan, 2008-01-16 11:53:59

JIM FRA well said!! I'm tired of hearing about the leafs. Who cares already they suck, they have sucked for a very long time and they will continue to suck for a very long time.
Dwain, 2008-01-16 11:50:35

You mean there's more than 1 NHL team in Canada?TO this TO that ,,really who cares?Maybe they should move the team to winnipeg.Like they say the West is the best.

Dennis, 2008-01-16 11:35:06

man oh man!! i hate the leafs with a passion but they are only 6 pts out of a playoff spot..they should blow up buffalo/tampa/carolina they are all playing brutal..my personal feeling is i hope they dont.. they will win three in a row and all will be ok in toronto they will be preparing the parade and they will be the greatest thing since sliced bread..
