What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Wow Guy, a great suggestion --- and this coming from a guy in Ottawa!

No seriously, I scratch my head at the leafs bringing in Fletcher, Mr. "Draft, Schmaft"? (Aren't we supposed to be rebuilding through the draft here, or am I missing something?)

Messier would be a great idea, providing he has Bowman or Neil Smith to help him. But alas, fresh ideas are not to be with the Leafs. In Leaf land, we recycle!

I think they should the fire the coach and tell ferguson to get lost. Then bring back pat quinn.

NOT employ Cliff Fletcher Great GM in the early 90's but built through trades and free agent signings but never won the Cup for the Leafs and now he is TOO old for the new NHL

The Leafs team doctor has just finished completing physicals on all the players and reports to JFJ.

JFJ: Well Doc, how do they stand?

Doc: Thats what puzzles me!

Realistically, what's the point in bringing in an interim GM 50 games into the campaign.I think the Make Beleafs are dreaming if they think they can salvage this season by turning to a second-time-round Cliff Fletcher. Here's what I'd do. Let the present coach and GM finish out the season, despite the fact they were both bad hires to begin with. Promptly relieve them of their duties the day after the last game. Shock the entire hockey world by bringing in none other than Mark Messier as the new GM with complete control of hockey operations. Never mind his lack of experience. This guy will surround himself with top notch hockey people including a coach who is from the same mold as he. Imagin having to look GM Messier in the eye after putting a sub par effort as most little Leafs do today.

i get sick and tired of hearing "the leafs ownership doesn't want to win", of course they do. they just have a clown(richard peddy) running things thats all, he should be in the circus walking the elephants around because thats all he is qualified for.

bring back fletch for GM and Quinn as coach. that is success. to all you non leaf fans, the sky is blue and white because GOC is a leaf fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Toronto maple leafs being the most profitable team in the league show be very embarrassed on the performance for many years past. It is time to rebuild right from the top down. Get rid of Sundin, tucker etc. for alot of fresh new young players. Please use Poggy for a goalie, he'll probably be alot better than what they have now.

Look i am a huge Leaf fan and like to look on the bright side of things. But... the problem with the Leafs from what i see is they have no identity, some nights they look like they can win Lord Stanley's Mug, others they look like little leaguers. Ferguson has not given the Leafs any wiggle room in salary, Kubina is getting paid 5+ million and he is a number 3 sometimes 4 in this lineup. Raycroft what we gave up for him! The problem is with the ownership of this team not JFJ, all they care about is the bottom line. As for Sundin remember that his fate is in his own hands

All these Leaf fans living in denial! For some reason they believe the next win or next bandaid fix will "turn the team around"!The team has been run into the ground & there's no easy quick fix.Yes, you have to gut the team & start over - but they have squandered any future talent that they had lined up.A lottery pick or first pick overall isn't going to change anything. One or two players won't change anything. But I doubt that the Leaf fans and TO media would be patient enough to wait a few years for the team to rebuild (they'll still sell out the AC Center though).

A reliable back-up goalie couldn't hurt...

On a different note: I despise the CBC for their overload of Leaf games. The smug announcers are the icing on the cake!

I agree w/ "Paulo" - move the team to Hamilton where they DEMAND good quality hockey for their money!

For the record: I'm a Habs fan & it took great effort not to be overly smug or insulting to the die-hard Leaf fans.

Let the RIM executive bring a franchise to Hamilton or Kitchener. It will give us an option. The Leafs will have to do better or look at a half-filled hangar.
