What should the Leafs do?
Tue, January 8, 2008

The Maple Leafs felt like throwing a hockey stick through the television following last night's 3-2 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, preferably at the big HD screen at National Hockey League headquarters in Toronto.

But angry Nik Antropov took the team's anger at a costly overtime penalty and three video replay reversals the hardest, hurling his stick towards referees Mike Leggo and Don Koharski after Rod Brind'Amour netted the game-winner.

Forget about throwing hockey sticks. What about throwing in the towel on the season? What should the Leafs do before the trade deadline? Have your say in our forum.

Oh yeah..Ferguson was fired today...but the real culprit(Peddie) is still in charge...nothing changes for the good in Leafland....

I agree with Trev...Tannebaum needs to grow a set and send Peddie packin'....What's wrong Richard(or is it ok to call you Dick)? Scotty Bowman's resume wasn't good enough? And then you leave JFJ to be ridiculed by media for months while you hide like a spineless jellyfish? I hope Ont. Teacher's pension wakes up..

....now Peddie must go!
Peggi, 2008-01-22 14:46:12

I'm a Habs fan and I have to say, that I think the whole situation regarding Ferguson has been totally mishandled. I'll bet he could see the writing on the wall. But, this firing could have/should have, been handled much more professionally. Instead of outright firing JFJ, they kept him on, while interviewing his replacement practically in front of his face.

And it's not like Fletcher will have an easy transition either. He'll have to contend with the TO three-headed dog; the Board of Governors, The Ontario Teachers' Pension Fund and Richard Peddie. As an outsdier looking in, I really have no idea who is calling the shots in the Leaf organization. I can only imagine how the players must feel.

Firing JFJ was the right thing to do. But, what should have been done objectively and with professionalism, turned this situation into a media feeding fiasco. The man was humiliated and, in my opinion, the trigger man, Peddie, has lost a lot of respect as a result. Too late for any damage control.

To give the Leafs a fighting chance Peddie needs to be kicked to the curb next.
Trev, 2008-01-22 13:59:18

what is the big deal bringing in fletcher.with 43 million tied up and you have to resign sundin if he is still there stajan, steen and whoever else cliff will have to be a magician..........ps i hate the leafs so it looks good on the organization..

The leafs have really been in shambels since expansion. They do not care about the product they put on the ice because they sell out every night and off ice sales are huge. The only real way to change things is for fans to stop supporting the team for the short time, dont pay for this junk. I am a leaf fan who has had enough of the past time to REALLY look forward and not just with saying the proper thing

Not a big Leafs fan anyway but Ferguson is not out there on the ice making all the mistakes that are putting the Leafs in the basement anyways.

Well, according to reports, it's a done deal. JFJ has been sacked. Seems Maurice is ok for the time being. But I just don't understand this "back to the future" routine - with management as well as players that seems to be the approach of this organization.
George O'Leary, 2008-01-22 12:54:32

The players are ultimately to blame... yeah they might not be the best team on paper, but they can produce a better product if they can get their game together. When this team is on its game they can beat anyone, but they need to stay with this effort from start to finish for 60 mins for ALL games.

BUT does all of this really matter? When JFJ came in he had a 5 yr rebuilding plan but was denied because the board said no... so he was left doing patch work which lead to silly contracts and to inking some so so players. I feel for JFJ really... yeah he could have done a better job, but the board and the rest of the upper management needs to get their act together before anything good can happen.
