Who's the best sport announcer?
Wed, October 10, 2007

If you're a sports fan, they are the men who can sometimes make or break the sports-watching experience – play-by-play announcers.

There’s a fair share of duds – guys whose sole purpose in life seems to be to annoy the viewer – who can single-handedly break the experience for some fans. But there are some who we just love to listen to, who can turn a snoozefest of a game into ratings winner, whose familiar voice can be comforting, like visiting with an old friend.

I pretty much agree with the list. But if we're going All-Time...I know both have passed on and I'm surely showing my age here but no one will ever top Danny Gallivan for hockey and for baseball...it will be centuries before we find someone as great as Mel Allen! How about that!!

I'll start with the Blue Jays because I've seen so many of their games over the years. Don Chevrier and Tony Kubek were great together. It was fantastic to hear Don do a couple of innings recently. Jim Hughson and Buck Martinez were tremendous. I couldn't believe that Dan Shulman and Buck were even better. Great compliment to one another. I still feel Martinez is the best colour man the Jays have ever had. Big fan of Jim Hughson on HNIC and I feel he is their number 1. Joe Bowen calls it like it's the seventh game of a series and his wild enthusiasm is great, if you're a Leafs fan.

I loved Tom Cheek, and I really like Jerry Howarth. I wish we could get better Blue Jays announcers on TV.

I always liked Dan Schulmann when he did baseball in Canada,Jim Hughson did well on CBC baseball coverage this year. Jamie Campbell & Pat Tabler were excellent, but Rance Mullinks (sp)needs a lot of work.

I like Robert's list there. Also Al Michaels has been fantastic for the NFL for years. Always enjoyed Gary Bender (now does Suns basketball). Vin Scully is still great no matter how old he is, not to mention he does not use a color man.

That Jim Hughson is on the list speaks of how low hockey broadcasting has sunk in the last number of years. No one will ever touch the tandem of Danny Gallivan and Dick Irvin. Irvin personified the type of colour commentator who didn't think it was necessary to fill every moment with needless chatter.( a la John Davidson, Greg Millen, etc.)Most of my hockey today is watched with the sound muted.

I would unmute for Chris Cuthbert and John Garrett, or Harry Neale.

I don't like announcing during games. I liked it better when there was that CBC strike, and the games were aired live without commentary. It was like being at the game in person. I wish we could have the option to turn off the announcer's voices on our digital feed.

Bob Cole and Harry Neal have got to be the worse! The best time I ever enjoyed a hockey game was when they were on strike and all you heard was the sounds of the game and not those blabing boresomes. Joe Bowen holy maca something is lame too.

What a wonderful list. Couldn't stop laughing. It's good to see that Sun Media Sports has time to come up with hilarious columns such as this one. Buck? Costas? Michaels? Nantz? Ha ha ha! Well done.

Oh wait. Were you being serious?

Danny Gallivan, Foster Hewitt and Chris Cuthbert
