Who's the best sport announcer?
Wed, October 10, 2007

If you're a sports fan, they are the men who can sometimes make or break the sports-watching experience – play-by-play announcers.

There’s a fair share of duds – guys whose sole purpose in life seems to be to annoy the viewer – who can single-handedly break the experience for some fans. But there are some who we just love to listen to, who can turn a snoozefest of a game into ratings winner, whose familiar voice can be comforting, like visiting with an old friend.

Listen/watch all the NHL teams on NHL Center Ice...then you'll understand that we as Canadians are just blessed to hear the games currently called by Bob Cole, Jim Hughson, Ed Whalen, Chris Cuthbert, Joe Bowen, and formerly by Danny Gallivan, Foster Hewitt and His son Bill and the great Dan Kelly. Rick Jeanneret in Buffalo is a good play-by-play guy. How about Pat Foley for the Hawks, Mike Lange for the Penguins, Doc Emerick in Jersey and Gary Thorne could call it with the best of them. All the names above call the game with character of their own that make hockey enjoyable to listen to. The rest are the B team. In football, Keith Jackson, Pat Summerall, Al Michaels, Dick Enberg...why not throw in Howard Cosell.. In baseball, Joe Buck calls a great game, Dan Shulman is great to listen too. Harry Carey... Van Miller calling Bills Football was worth listening too. I am sure I missed a name or two. The best will always be the one that keeps you tuned in.

Bob Cole used to be excellent. He still has that great voice, but makes a lot of mistakes nowadays.

The guy for Buffalo is really bad when Buffalo scores.

Joe Bowen? I like him.

In my books the best all around sports announcer was Don Dunphy of boxing, he could do any sports play by play with clarity and colour. My second choice is Foster Hewitt in hockey, he started it and everybody else copied it there after. Lets look at history and not only the present.

The Sabres announcer is an idiot. He announces every goal as if it is the Stanley Cup winning goal. Who hires these fools?

He is almost as lousy as the child-like giggling, dufus, Joe Bowen. Talk about arrested development! These two shills have I.Q's of about the same as my dogs. (my apologies to all mutts)

Listen to the Sabres games on 550 AM. Rick Jeanarett is by far, the best there is!

Foster Hewitt, Danny Gallivan are ones that I remember. Foster Hewitt's son as well.

Geez this is too easy, there's only one great all-time broadcaster.... CURT KEILBACK!!

It's quite difficult to pick the best because most of them suck. Dave Van Horne and Duke Snider doing the Expos games were the best.

The worst hockey announcers is pretty easy: Harry Neale & Bob Cole are just plain brutal. That goofball that does the Leafs, Joe Bowen is a moron, as is his new sidekick Greg Millen. .

But probably the most annoying is the jerk with the moustache on CTV...Rod Black...he ruins every event that he announces whether it is golf, baseball, basketball...whatever. He is the original "jock-sniffing-girly-man"

A better question would be who is Canada's worst sports announcer?

Bob Cole or Harry Neale?

Harry Neale in Buffalo, we don't have to listen to him on HNIC anymore, there is a god. well not for leaf fans.

It's a very impressive list. Our Canadians rank with the best. Gallivan, Hewitt,Bowen,Rod Phillips,Pascall,Hughson,Cuthbert,Maher are top hockey broadcasters. We've lived in Alberta and BC and have enjoyed this group.A Salute to Canada!
