Let me throw a new one out there ... coming from the experience of playing high level hockey and soccer and FIELD HOCKEY. The most demanding and skilled sport is FIELD HOCKEY. Same size pitch as soccer, 90 min games, same sub rules but the ball moves 10 times faster so the players must as well and a field hockey player is using his hands and feet at high speed like hockey. Hockey is not just about ICE!!

HOCKEY. (FULL STOP)!!!

MMA athlete's seem to be right up at the top, all they do is train constantly for a fight, then fight... then train for a fight constantly... then fight....

In 1976 at the Montreal Olympics they did a study and considered all the variables in each sport, demands in the cardio system and anarobic systems etc. along with technique and skills. It turns out that single shell sculling (rowing) puts the ultimate demand on the body, every major muscle group is put to it's absolute limit and then the mental aspect is called upon, sorry guys, I've played most of what has been mentioned here but unless you have been into the last 250 metres of a 2000 metre race, in total oxygen debt and not able to see anything but one big blur then you just haven't began to cut it. (all due respect to boxers)

Trev.

Any study (and especially any study by ESPN)that places Baseball over sports like Soccer, Lacrosse & Rugby is obviously junk.

Having played soccer and (to a less degree hockey) and therefore can only comment on these two, I would have to say that soccer skills and hockey skills are similar in level.

Soccer is like wind sprinting for 90 minutes. I was always in great shape and even had some skill. When playing hockey I could skate OK, but was a terrible cluts with puck handling. I have good hand eye coordination so one would think it would spill over from the two sports.

I think hockey does produce the best athletes despite the cardio involved in soccer.

whoever wrote that article must only watch soccer. The jog over 3/4 of the game (you might as well put a marathoner at the top of the list). to hit the highest level that a body can produce is full out, hockey shifts are quick but take everything out of the player at full tilt ....he goes to the bench for two minutes no oxygen, no dive to stop play(gotta like that in soccer NOT) and then out there going %100 again. when was the last time you saw a fat hockey player at the top levels.....soccer boy take a step down

Soccer? Ptui!!!

Hockey players do everything other athletes do and they do it on skates! "Nuff said.

To Darren,

What I meant was that hockey players are able to glide on their skates (but I am not ignorant of the fact that players don't have the option of doing that often in a game). Soccer and basketball players must use pure foot power.

I also want to distinguish that I was describing what I think is the best "athlete", which I equate to aerobic ability. If it came down to SKILL LEVEL, then I agree --- no sport in the world can touch hockey in that regard.

They all use different muscles and require different types of exertion. I played a lot of sports. I would play soccer and be in great shape. Step on the ice and I was exhausted. After the hockey season, i would run on the soccer field and be exhausted again. I would run a 10k and the next day sprint on a basketball court and be exhausted. I still think individual sports like marathon, triathalon, extreme marathons and bicycle racers are in the best shape. Although lance armstrong did stuggle through the NYC Marathon and said it was far more grueling than anything he had done before, including his 7 tour wins.
