Some athletes in every sport are more athletic than others in the same sport.

If you take this argument and go POUND FOR POUND - a thoroughbred jockey is the best athlete.
They need to weight between 105 & 115 pounds...their legs need to be stong enough to balance mostly on their toes for a length of time with a moving animal underneath them....all the while restraining/steering/ controlling a 1200 pound moving animal underneath them.
I believe a study was done back in the 70's or 80's that showed POUND FOR POUND a jockey is the fittest athlete.

I've heard the same thing about rowers having the most physically demanding event, but there is more to athleticism than that. There's something to be said about the finesse and hard-hitting involved in sports like hockey, football, and to a lesser extent basketball. Then there are other athletic feats that may not seem as physical but are still in the realm of athleticism, like hitting a major league fastball.
I've played hockey, football and basketball and hockey takes more athleticism in my opinion.

Im sorry folks, if you think about it in hockey and average player plays on ice 15-20 minutes all out per game, soccer players, regardless of stoppages, half to be on 90 minutes, and for those of you who say injury time, well thast why its added on.
Of the two great sports, Soccer ranks a bit better i find. you also want to talk about athlete, you have to add basketball in there as you see players run back and forth leap and bound to make baskets. they all rank up there in their own ways.
But BILL is on the money, no one has mentioned Rowing. Some lunkheads may not even think about it as a sport, but it is the MOST complete workout you can ever get competeing. Totally agree BILL.
I think most people need to mention what sports theyve played to make an accurate judement on this topic

And anyone that says that they are not athletes at all, you go drive at 200 mph in scorching heat and see whats up.
