Who do you support in the Burke-Lowe feud?
Thu, October 4, 2007

Tired of the constant verbal attacks from Anaheim GM Brian Burke, Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish both launched counter punches at The Mouth That Roared. Burke, still upset that Edmonton signed Dustin Penner to a five-year offer sheet last summer, mugged for the TSN cameras on Tuesday, griping about the "colossal stupidity of what the Edmonton Oilers did."

Lowe responded yesterday by calling Burke an "egomaniac" and a "blowhard," and MacTavish likened him to a media puppet.

Oilers fire back at Burke

If you are an Oiler fan, you'll likely support Lowe because you "have to." If you are NOT an Oiler fan (not an Oiler hater, just a fan of one of the other teams), then you'll likely support Burke (or at least you should), because his points are very, very sensible. Lowe did nothing but blame "everyone else" for the fact that you cannot attract anyone with money and talent to Edmonton. Lowe then went on his stupid offer sheet spree, artificially inflating the salaries of every young RFA prospect in the league to pre-lockout levels. All just to save his job - to heck with the long-term ramifications on the league!

What Burke has vocalized is the sentiment of 29 other GMs in the league. Sure, Bob Clark started these offer sheets in Philadelphia with his sheet to Kessler. But it was more reasonable, and not this nonsense given to Penner and Vanek, which is arguably done in the guise of KLOWN sticking it to the other GMs in the league who have it WAY better than him.

When the Oilers suck this season and are in desperate need of a trade, don't expect GM's lining up to help KLOWN, unless they can fleece that guy in the process.

Kevin Lowe made the offer within the CBA rules of free agency that Burke agreed to at the GM meetings.Does Burke remember when he stoled Pronger from the Oilers for a rookie and at best 3rd line player(lupul).Grow up and do what's best for your team not your pride,Burke.Would Burke be this upset if Niedermayer and Selanne weren't dicking him around about retirement.Time to go Duck hunting.

Well... Burke may be making a stink, but as a fan I wish more teams would use the RFA rules. Good for Edmonton.

Burke is the guy that everybody avoids at the GM meetings, and when he does come around, I can see somebody like Bobby Clarke saying "Nice job on Penner, Burkie." to tease him.

Grouchy old man.

Brian Burke is acting like a jilted lover!

He's mad about two things. Let's review.

1. He's mad that the Oilers didn't notify him in advance that they were going to make an offer to Dustin Penner. Would that have been such a good idea? That would have given Burke the heads up and he would have offered Penner a contract, ruining the Oilers chances of fair negotiation.

2. He's mad at how much the Oilers paid for Dustin Penner. First of all, it's the Oilers' money and they'll pay whatever they can afford. Secondly, it is impossible to sign a restricted free agent to an offer sheet for their fair market value. If you want to steal an RFA you must offer enough so that the other team will possibly decide not to match the offer.

Conclusion? Brian Burke is whining. Even HE said that he'll have his assistant GM make the phone call if the Ducks need to contact the Oilers. If that's not personal, I don't know what is. Burke needs to grow up and stop talking.

Burke is easily the most annoying person in hockey. He did nothing in Vancouver, inherited an already stacked team in Anaheim, signed a has-been like Bertuzzi for 4 million a year and consequently couldn't afford to keep Penner and then cries (on camera of course) about how evil Lowe and the Oilers are. Now he has no Penner, no Selanne and no Neidermeyer. Will all the gullible fools out there still be calling this putz a genius after this season? LOL. I long for the day when Burke shuts his trap. Go Oilers Go!

Wow, Burke acting like a petulant 3 year old...I'm shocked! ;)
Yun Cha, 2007-10-04 16:03:20

Lowe did the best he could with unrestricted free agents, so he went after restricted free agents which is within the rules. If the league or other teams don't like it they should remove the rule, not cry about it like Burke! Burke is a big bully and he shut his pie hole!
Derran, 2007-10-04 15:58:48

What the Oilers did was within their rights as an organization, and IS playing by the rules as they are written.

If Burke hadn't over-commited his spend by signing the likes of Bertuzzi and Schneider to large long term contracts than he wouldn't have been in the position to loose a player, which based on the sensitivity of subject and prolonged ranting by Burke, was something he didn't want to do.

Because "Blowhard" Burke doesn't like the rules of the game, maybe he shouldn't play it. Until then, he should shut up, and leave well enough alone!

Burke is a motor mouth lawyer a 2 h/p brain with a 500 h.p mouth,,loves the limelite!!!!

I have to support Burke in all this. He may have used his typical colorful way of making his point but he did make a point, something that Edmonton's brass have made obvious that they are incapable of disputing anything he said by responding with nothing more than insults you'd find quicker in a preschool playground
