Who do you support in the Burke-Lowe feud?
Thu, October 4, 2007

Tired of the constant verbal attacks from Anaheim GM Brian Burke, Kevin Lowe and Craig MacTavish both launched counter punches at The Mouth That Roared. Burke, still upset that Edmonton signed Dustin Penner to a five-year offer sheet last summer, mugged for the TSN cameras on Tuesday, griping about the "colossal stupidity of what the Edmonton Oilers did."

Lowe responded yesterday by calling Burke an "egomaniac" and a "blowhard," and MacTavish likened him to a media puppet.

Sorry Burky, you are way off on this one. While Lowe did overpay, and set a very dangerous precident for restricted free agents, it is in the CBA that Lowe is within his rights. In the past there was an unwritten rule about taking restricted free agents, this is a new CBA and the Oilers are desperate to sign players. I think over the next couple of years you will see a lot more of this, especially with teams that have no room on the cap. Gone are the days where you can build a contender for years, and when a team like Anaheim has success, the players on the team will demand higher salaries, and therefore you won't be able to keep talent forever. Remember this was negotiated during the strike, and if the ownership of the league did not see this coming, then they acted in a short sighted manner.

Next year you can look forward to teams like Ottawa, San Jose, Detroit, Anaheim again to losing a few players this way.

Not an Oiler fan, not a Duck fan either. The rules were set in place so that all teams could use them as required. Clarke did the same to Vancouver a few years ago, it didn't pan out but the fact he tried it soon died off. Burke can't seem to shut his trap and let this episode die. Hey Burke! Did it ever occurr to you that Salane and Neidermyer won't come back because you're there? Not to mention Penner wanting to go anyway!

Burke really doesn't like a free market does he? They got their cap, and he still whines like a baby because he thinks Lowe is throwing salaries all out of wack. Too bad!!! Lowe has every right to spend/overspend within the cap rules! Sure Burke can disagree, get mad, stomp around and blow a blood vessel...but crying on TV and saying things like that about Lowe? He reminds me of someone who use to own the Leafs...Maybe we should call him "Harold Burke"!!!

I support the Oilers. Let us see if motormouth can win a second Stanley cup. He knew that Penner was going to be a restricted free agent so why didn`t he sign him before. I believe the ducks will start losing and become a very average team within 2 years. He will become a duck killer like he was a canuck killer. Gordie

Brian Burke is an arrogant tape worm that sucks and wiggles his way into the dirt.
Don Juan, 2007-10-04 16:49:41

I cant believe Burke is still going on like this. I guess he wants his cake and eat it to.

If he wanted Penner so badly he shouldnt have signed Bertuzzi. He wanted both players but hey thats life we dont always get what we want.

Your a big boy Burke shut up and move on already!

I personally always used to like Burke as a straight shooter but he's taking this thing way too far especially with the personal comments and it's finally nice to see Lowe somewhat defend himself.

Lowe just has to worry about the Oilers and answer only to his bosses. Burke is starting to look bad and should stop complaining about a guy who's following the rules....some of which were decided with input from GMs like Burke.
Roger, 2007-10-04 16:36:36

Throughout the NHL GM set their sites on how to make their team better How is this any different. Is Penner worth the coin who knows - thats what Lowe decide to do with his coin. How many others have spent big bucks only to have that player be a total disappointment. BURKE shut your PIE HOLE.. Worry about your own team and stop crying about your mistakes and blaming everyone else for what they are trying to accomplish - TO WIN THE STANLEY CUP!!
Krazy in Edmonton, 2007-10-04 16:27:28

I support Burke 100%. All he was doing was answering a question truthfully. Lowe and McGoof should have taken the high road, but unfortunately they don't know how!
