Who should be the Leafs' No.1 goalie? Wed, October 3, 2007
Andrew Raycroft was happy, Vesa Toskala was not. It was pretty clear who got the starting assignment in goal for Wednesday night's Toronto Maple Leafs season opener against the rival Ottawa Senators, even if head coach Paul Maurice refused to confirm it after the pre-game skate at Air Canada Centre.
"It's really not a big deal to either one of us, obviously it's nice to be playing," said Raycroft, before adding a kicker: "At least I'll be getting one game in this year."
Wow, the media is sure making this into a big deal; must be a slow day or something.
What does it matter who starts the first game? Just play both goalies for the first while and see who (if any) settle into the number one sport.
There's nothing controversial about it.

Robin:
Very thoughtful and insightful comment in response to the question at hand. You must be a real student of the game - idiot! Just another Leaf basher bitter that the Leafs are the richest franchise in hockey and that they have the greatest and most loyal fans.
Regarding the question - we can expect a goaltending dual throughout the season and I believe that was the idea when Toskala was signed. I don't have a problem with Raycroft starting game 1 - Toskala did look shakey in the pre-season.

Toskala needs to be given a fair chance to be the #1. Raycroft had that last year and sucked badly. Maurice needs to ride Toskala like he rode raycroft last year.

They are setting Raycroft up for a fall to then have Toska take over. 1# team in the east lost #1 for Raycroft.

I would start Darcy Tucker in goal, as his turtle style would be more effective than the other two, plus players would be tempted to shoot at him rather than at the goal.

I would start Raycroft. Toskala has looked awful during the exhibition games. Not sure if he can handle the pressure of the opening game in Toronto. If Raycroft does well then they should continue to play him.

They spent all this money and time on bringing in Toskala, and then they go with the same ole same ole....come on, start him and ride him for as far as he can go, then go with Raycroft - if needed

I think the Leafs No. 1 goalie should be Justin Pogge. I don't want to hear anything about his age as younger goalies have been brought up (Felix Potvin anyone?)
