Who should be the Leafs' No.1 goalie?
Wed, October 3, 2007

Andrew Raycroft was happy, Vesa Toskala was not. It was pretty clear who got the starting assignment in goal for Wednesday night's Toronto Maple Leafs season opener against the rival Ottawa Senators, even if head coach Paul Maurice refused to confirm it after the pre-game skate at Air Canada Centre.

"It's really not a big deal to either one of us, obviously it's nice to be playing," said Raycroft, before adding a kicker: "At least I'll be getting one game in this year."

Toskala rides the pines for opener

Neither Vesa nor Andy would be no. 1 on any playoff bound team.

Andy let in 3 goals in 5 shots in the 3rd period last night. He is an average goaltender who can be expected to win the odd game now and then. Vesa's flaws are being exposed. A little guy who has trouble when he is on his knees to stop shots over his shoulder. He has never carried a team as a no. 1 goalie and shouldn't be expected to now.

Guess who is to blame for spending all that money and 3 draft choices?

Please fire JFJ and put us out of our misery.

Jake:

How did you like that leafs game last night?Choked on a lead as usual. I have nothing but respect for leaf fans still following their team after a half century of no cup.Maybe JFJ can bring Cujo back and he can be #1 as well.

The Leafs could start Santa and they'd still lose

No question it should have been Toskala. They paid a huge price to get him ( 1st round draft pick and a third ) and a 2 year $ 8 million contract extension. Raycroft showed last year he cant get the job done. The biggest game of the year when the Leafs had to win and he gets pulled!

Why does the Toronto Media have to fabricate Controversy and tension within the Leaf dressing room? Shut up and leave it alone already. Who cares if there is no clear cut #1, as long as they both play well enough for us to make the Playoffs.

Who really cares???

It isn't hard to discern the pragmatic, objective fans - regardless of how "loyal" they are - from those who allow their love of one team and dislike of another to cloud their comments with epithets like "so-and-so sucks" - "so-and-so RULES" - "GO (whoever) GO." This tells me straight off that the writer is a juvenile (in spirit if not actually in age) with a hat-on-backwards juvenile approach to the game. Cheering for your team is one thing, looking at the overall scene without either wearing rose-coloured glasses or underlining your comments with such idiot expressions is something else. I can't conceive of anyone with an IQ higher than a turnip getting any satisfaction out of posting drivel like that and then sitting back to actually see it in print. Let everyone know what you think of the team you follow but in a manner that doesn't lean towards wishful thinking. In the end, that's just a useless emotion, more often than not without any meaningful return.

I would start Raycroft.

Toskala is the Leaf's key offseason and very expensive acquistion.

Sitting him on the bench will allow a quicker way of his understanding the prevailing attitude of his team mates....disillusioned, sad and hopeless.

Toskala was accustomed to playing in a positive environment, on a winning team. This will help speed his adjustment to living in Leaf world.

They should be calling up Cujo and getting him to start.

Both Raycroft and Toskala stink to high heaven.

Go Sens!

So you trade 3 picks including a 1st rounder for this guy, give him a large contract extension and don't sign him? Sure his preseason performance was poor, but aren't we also told not to read much into the preseason? Raycrofts win totals last year were a fraud. He was easily in the bottom 3 starting goalies in the league maybe better than only Marc Denis and whoever LA decided to trot out.
