Which NHL team might surprise you this season?
Tue, October 2, 2007

Every team in the NHL made off-season moves in an effort to bolster their lineup, but only some will end up liking what they got.

The Philadelphia Flyers hit a home run by signing centre Daniel Briere and the Florida Panthers were wise to acquire goaltender Tomas Vokoun via trade.

The New York Rangers also made a splash by signing Scott Gomez and Chris Drury in the off-season. Sidney Crosby, now 20, looks to defend his scoring title and lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to new heights.

In the West, the Anaheim Ducks will defend their Stanley Cup title without Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne in the lineup due to talk of retirement. The Ducks also lost Dustin Penner to the Edmonton Oilers.

The Detroit Red Wings are likely to continue their dominance of the weak Central Division.

Another season, another run to the title. Give us your thoughts on which team might surprise in the NHL this season and why that will happen.

LOL I agree 100 %. Leaf fans wear rose coloured glasses. Anytime someone in the organization says playoffs or stanley Cup contender everyone loses there mind and buys it hook line and sinker.

The only fans shocked by the leafs ending up near the bottom, would be Leaf fans. The rest of us already know they suck.

I agree with Rick.

The Leafs will shock everyone by being one of the worst teams in the NHL this year.

Rick

LMAO, good post

George

Washington signed Nylander, Poti and will have last years number 1 draft pick Backstrom playing with Ovechkin so I think they will make the playoffs.

I agree with you about Florida though, they were playing really well down the stretch last year and I see them carrying it over into this year especially with Vokoun in net.

I also like the Flyers to make the playoffs. Holmgren did an amazing job of making trades at the deadline and signing free agents in the summer.

you guys are all idiots all I gotta say.

Jimmy, I think you're bang on about Washington and Florida being improved, but I really doubt that the Capitals have the depth to actually make the playoffs. Oh, they'll be in the multi-team mix fighting for 8th, but in the end I see Philadelphia getting that spot. Florida, on the other hand, will get to 7th. This team was, after Ottawa and Colorado, the hottest team in the League from late January on and, like Colorado, will carry it over into this season.

The team that will surprise everyone is the Leafs. They will be far worse than anyone anticipated. The biggest surprise will be when they trade the number 1 draft spot, which they'll win in the draft lottery, for another backup goalie.

Hope springs eternal from this Sabres' fan since the team's spirited playoff series with the Habs in 1973. They don't have Perreault, Martin, Robert, Luce and, for that matter, Briere and Drury, anymore, but don't count this club out by any stretch of the imagination. Buffalo a one-line team? Stay tuned, my friends, stay tuned. Your correspondent is still proudly wearing blue and gold in Fall River, Nova Scotia.

The team to look at this year is Chicago they have added many fast young players, they will do much better this year and might just make the playoffs
