Should Downie be suspended for his hit on McAmmond?
Wed, September 26, 2007

Dean McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital after suffering a concussion following a dirty hit to the head 2:39 into the second period by Philly's Steve Downie.

Downie, who was drafted in the first round by the Flyers in the 2005, earned a reputation with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers for being a hit-and-run artist.

Do you think Downie is a hit-and-run artist, or a gritty forward who always finishes his checks? Should he be suspended for the hit? Have your say in our forum.

Hey Downie, heads up

No doubt, the NHL can't allow these type of dangerous checks to the head and they need to send a message.

One way or another, Downie will get what's coming to him.

But McGratton and the Sens better watch themselves. Remember the Bertuzzi hit on Steve Moore? There are a lot of parallels here so far as it was Moore's hit on Naslund that started it all.

The Sens better deal with this internally right now and move on, or else this situation is going to get much worse.

Any GM, coach or player that threatens retaliation against Downie should be held to account for his future actions. Let him never play an NHL game.

Any GM or Coach that puts Downie back on their team should be held to account for his future actions. Let him never play an NHL game.

I have to laugh at the way this story gets better as time goes by. At first, Downie took a run from the blueline to make the hit, next it was Jason Blake claiming that he came from his own blueline, and I read in the paper this morning that he skated the length of the ice to make the hit.

Like I said in a previous post, the penalty should be maximum 5 games. Pronger gets 1 and 1 for two similar infractions in the playoffs last year - how can you go more than 5 for Downie if there's to be any kind of consistency.

I agree too that McAmmond shares the blame for his injury - if he wasn't busy admiring his pass, he could have avoided or minimized the impact of the hit.

Chris, have you been to minor league games in the last 10 years? They're violent, and coaches and parents do nothing to stop it, hell, they condone it. Now, I'm wasn't saying he intended to injure Dean when he threw the check, I meant he was amped up, playing a little harder. He may have gotten carried away, maybe it was 'roid rage (sorry, I couldn't resist!!), or maybe, just maybe, he was sending a message to the league that he thinks he's the real deal so watch out. It's kinda like when Chara beat the daylights out of Domi, he didn't have to throw him around like a ragdoll, but he got caught in the moment. And again, like others had pointed out, McAmmond just had contol of the puck but it may have been a little late, play wasn't dead, and there was no stick or elbow thrown.

I'll go back to my point of Scott Stevens - I personally think he was one of the dirtiest players...clean hits, dirty intents, but he was a grizzled veteran and an all-star, Downie is a rookie.

"You hit the head? Bye-bye"

?

Okay.

Bye-bye Havlat and Neil.

The hypocrites run the asylum.

Downie has been a "dirty player" for all of his junior career...stick-work,cheap hits,mouthy/insulting..the refs, coaches and players let him get away with it because he is also a very skilled player...the N.H.L. may finally teach him a lesson..if not,he will continue on until someone teaches him a lesson,ie.bets the crap out of him,or he injures someone seriously...I hope Downie is smart enough to see the errors of his ways...he definitely deserves a suspension for attempt to injure..I would say a minimum of 20 games

Surprise surprise - all the sens fans again calling for life time bans or big suspensions just like they always do when a sens takes a hit. Good laugh reading the posts here - "worse hit ever" - why? Because it was a Sens? How long have you watched Hockey? What I saw was a good old fashioned hit on a player that should have known better but still didn't keep his head up and his eyes open. Been, there done it, carried on with my eyes open again.

Same old thing as last year again - a sen was hit so it is a major crime. Remember during the playoffs last year a certain Sen player that would charge at players with both elbows up - the comments? What a nice hit!! Hopefully having a baby will calm him down this year.

Its time the suits stopped trying to deal with things as everytime they introduce a new rule to solve a problem things get worse. Get rid of fighting - sticks came into use. Get rid of checking - butts and elbows back in style. Pretty easy to slip those in and not get caught - just ask the master Gordie Howe.

Is there anything on this planet more pathetic than the average Leaf hater?
Mike, 2007-09-27 18:27:03

Steve Downie has proved since his junior career he is a dirty player. I believe he was suspended close to 10 times in while playing junior.

He is a loose cannon and one of these days he will hurt someone so bad they will be in a wheelchair for the rest of there life.

Give him at least 15 - 20 games with a stern warning any future hits like that will be 40 - 50 games or even a 1 year suspension.
