Should Downie be suspended for his hit on McAmmond?
Wed, September 26, 2007

Dean McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital after suffering a concussion following a dirty hit to the head 2:39 into the second period by Philly's Steve Downie.

Downie, who was drafted in the first round by the Flyers in the 2005, earned a reputation with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers for being a hit-and-run artist.

Do you think Downie is a hit-and-run artist, or a gritty forward who always finishes his checks? Should he be suspended for the hit? Have your say in our forum.

Hey Downie, heads up

the NHL bowed to the pressure of the Canadian media. Pronger gets a game for a second offense and a rookie gets 20 for a first. Campbell has always a different standard when dealing with the Flyers.

You are correct Pronger should of got more than 1 game.. The sens were never the same after that dirty hit.. It cost them the cup..

You are absolutely right - see my earlier post. The officiating in today's NHL is a joke. I truly believe that the refs are unable to keep up with the speed of the game. Tempers flair when there are inconsistent calls on the ice. They penalize very marginal and minor things and miss the big stuff (e.g. Koivu almost having his eye carved out year before last with no call - high sticks happen all the time with no penalty).

That aside, 20 games for Downie is excessive. Pronger's infractions may have been less severe - that's not a given however - but how does the league reconcile 1 game each in those cases vs. 20 games for Downie?

YES he should. I watched the hit over and over again. It was brutal, I think he should be gone for the rest of the season. He's a bully.
Jen, 2007-09-28 13:39:47

He definitely wasn't finishing a check unless he thought Mccammond still had the puck.

The homers and leafers catfighting aside it atleast 'looked' worse than either of Prongers or Neils hits.

Number one, get rid of the armoured pads.

Number two, heavy suspension for headshots, regardless of intent.

As with the law, ignorance is no excuse. This should go for knee on knee hits.

This is more a referee issue. What Downie was aggressive for sure and he should have left his feet. However, if the refs called the hit from behind that Schubert laid on Downie the Mccammond hit would never have happened. NHL refs, such as Jackson, are more of a problem than most people realize...

Yes, he should be suspended for the hit, but what is the maximum time for this? The NHL have to make the rules, not just treat every incident as it happens...such as Tucker,Neil, Pronger, Alfredson and so on...does it depend on who you are..and who you hit???? The retaliation talk going on now should also be dealt with by the league. Any retaliation hit on any player should have severe consequences. Let's play hockey guys, and let the leauge handle this.

I Loved Wade Belak's comment. 'I wouldn't think of doing that IN MY FIRST YEAR', or something like that. Like it wouldn't be as serious if he was in his second year. Good quote Wade.

Double standard here isn't it. I agree Downie should get at least 40 games but what about Chris Pronger who has a reputation for doing the same thing with hits to the head and only get 1 game because he is a superstar.
