Should Downie be suspended for his hit on McAmmond?
Wed, September 26, 2007

Dean McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital after suffering a concussion following a dirty hit to the head 2:39 into the second period by Philly's Steve Downie.

Downie, who was drafted in the first round by the Flyers in the 2005, earned a reputation with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers for being a hit-and-run artist.

Do you think Downie is a hit-and-run artist, or a gritty forward who always finishes his checks? Should he be suspended for the hit? Have your say in our forum.

Hey Downie, heads up

He was an embarassment in the OHL and he's an embarassment in the NHL. And neither league will ever have the guts to do whats right, and get rid of guys who's only claim to fame is cheap shots and sucker punches.

Twenty games is sort of meaningless. To send a message that these sort of Mike Peca "leave your skates and headhunt" type of hits have to stop--suspend the guy from playing pro or jr. hockey the entire season. He's young enough he can still play pro next season but let him sit and stew. It's not like this is the first time Downie has done something as stupid.

Congratulations to the NHL! They just showed us what an incompetent bunch of idiots they are! 20 games? They penalize a rookie but did almost anything to the other guys who did the same thing last year. How many games Cam Jansen got? And Chris Neil? And so on. Is this hit in the same category as Bertuzzi's attack on Moore or Chris Simon's stick-swinging incident? Come on!

he shouldn't be suspended at all. What about all the hits that injured players, good players by NJ's Scott Stevens. Every one was a dirty hit. Blind siding a quality player. But everybody thought he was a hero. This downie hit is no different than the many Stevens delivered.

Don't get me wrong, he deserves a suspension ... but I can think of a million things that has happened in the NHL in the last 10 years that deserve way more then this. Even the Simon thing ... he got 25 games. And he just about cut off that guys head! Downie is young and reckless. He needs to be tamed. The NHL better realize that they have set a standard now and have to stay the course. No more lowball suspensions. Or the NHLPA will be appealing EVERYTHING

I agree the hit was bad, and it was to the head. But lest we forget we were admiring Scott Stevens and all his head shots just a few years ago ... were those not to the head? Whats the difference? He never got suspended. Remember that KAriya hit, or Lindros hit? Can go on and on. Stevens was a great player, but it seems to me here that Downie is getting nailed quite severely.

It amazes me that they put him in the same category as Bertuzzi, yet the Chris Pronger's and Claude Lemieux's, because they're better known, get very little in the way of punishment and they're repeat offenders. This league is going to hell in a handbasket.

This is a mere slap on the fingers. He needs to be taught a lesson. This is a joke.

He's gonna serve those 20 games in the minors anyways!!It's not like he's a vital part of the flyers' organisation...If he was,the league would've done like they did to Pronger...A tap on the hand, one game suspention.I still feel that it's not as much what you do,in this league,in any league for that matter,as it is,who you are,and who you do it unto.Like anywhere else where a justice system is require to render a judgement, celebrities have "special status"..Very sad indeed!!
Mitch, 2007-09-28 16:00:29

This is a good start for hits to the head. Now the league has to stay consistent with any future hits to the head regardless who does it.
