Should Downie be suspended for his hit on McAmmond?
Wed, September 26, 2007

Dean McAmmond was taken off the ice on a stretcher and transported to hospital after suffering a concussion following a dirty hit to the head 2:39 into the second period by Philly's Steve Downie.

Downie, who was drafted in the first round by the Flyers in the 2005, earned a reputation with the OHL's Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers for being a hit-and-run artist.

Do you think Downie is a hit-and-run artist, or a gritty forward who always finishes his checks? Should he be suspended for the hit? Have your say in our forum.

Hey Downie, heads up

Downie went for the head, that's why he got suspended.Wake up people and look at the hit again.Shoulder to shoulder and he gets no penalty

I saw this kid play last year in Kitchener. He is a loose cannon who needs the rug pulled out from under his feet. Suspend him for life and let him see how it is in the real world....Goons like him wreck the game for the rest that love it....

I cant believe some of the stupid comments in here. McAmmond had his head down, he cant take a hit. You guys are idiots and dont have a clue about hockey.

Downie could have gotten a penalty for: charging, boarding ( leaving his feet ), late hit.

Yes a late hit, he made the pass from the front/side of the net and skated around the back of the net and came out on the other side, thats a late hit. Downie is a dirty player and he will get his payback!

No wonder the NHL is regarded as a second rate league ...This clown should have been banned for life...

What a joke!

Seems like a fair punishment. May save the career of the next guy Downie would have cold-clocked.

And to the 'oh he should have had his head up respondants'. It would make little difference. He was watching the play, which he was 2-3 strides away from at the time. Noone would be able to predict getting hit where he did. Ergo the 'dirtyness of the hit'.

I miss Don Cherry. Do they have HNIE on Saturday? I wanna hear Cherry's take on this hit.

I would have to say that that was a great hit, that is old time hockey, give the guy a break, its not his fault McCammond cant take a hit!

The fact of the matter is, Downie is a highly sought after hockey player and will be in the NHL for the next 15 years.

Wish my canucks had a guy like him.

To Ronald

You are blaming McAmmond for getting hurt ? Are you serious ? Its the responsibilty of the team doctor to say if an injured player has recovered and is 100 % to play.

Hockey is a contact sport so yes injuries will happen. When a player hits there opponent in the head then thats a cheap dirty check and will usually end up with a concussion. Have you seen the elbow pads and shoulder pads the players use today ? They are made of a hard piece of plastic, when I played they were made 100 % of material, no plastic at all. Next time you are near a sporting good store go look at the elbow and shoulder pads players use these days.

The hit was not as bad as it looked. Why did McAmmond not have his head up. the NHL has no idea of what a good hit is and whats not. Downie did not deserve this/

I laugh at the NHL. They continue to punish the result and not the action. There have been many other simmilar hits so far this early season and with no injury or media spectical, thus there has been no punishment.
